I think you need a high nitrogen food for it. Do you have a garden centre or somewhere that might sell plant food nearby?
The staff should be able to help you choose the right one.

is it by any chance a side facing a garden where weedkiller has been used? Or a bonfire?

If it is only yellow on one side I dopubt it is soil conditions. The waxy leaves mean they will stand up to weather and drought relatively well.

You are going to have to cut the yellow off. I have some Laurel, it sprouts and regrows well after pruning. The soft green parts are easy to cut, but you can cut into the woody base parts and it still comes back. This is not a bad time to cut it as it will grow well in the spring. Use the opportunity to make it the size and shape you want.

BTW if you put the prunings on a bonfire, they will smoke very badly, and they don't rot well in a compost heap either.

I'd say wind damage. we have had a lot of drying north winds this year. have a look about and you will see a lots of this type of damage about. mine are the same. you can cut it off as piglet says. the only other thing is to protect them from exposure to the winds with a wind break - i.e. another hedge which isn't usually practical.
