15 minute wash cycle - wondering whether I could use this more?

Got a 15 min quick wash cycle on our washing machine. Other washes take 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Have used the 15 min a couple of times when I've needed something in a hurry. It can only be more thorough than a hand wash, but obviously not as thorough as a longer cycle.

But am wondering - are there things I could wash regularly on that shorter cycle? Or are there any good reasons why not? (I wouldn't do towels & sheets on that routinely, for example). But blouses/trousers etc?

Boring post, you can tell I'm having a MN and FB housework day

Hi

Not really sure of the answer but I have a 20 minute programme on my washing machine and it says for lightly soiled items only. So, new clothes that need freshening or blouses, trousers worn once. I am with you - I like it and want to use it more but often wonder whether it gets things clean enough.

Will wait to see what other replies you get :)

I think I'd do things like kids' school skirts/trousers and the like. They don't smell, just look a bit grubby. Can't think of anything else that doesn't need a thorough wash, though. Jeans, perhaps?

ItWasThePenguins · 16/03/2012 14:27

I do small washes on the quick wash which is 30 mins, and add an extra spin, cos usually come out dripping.

might try it for a few weeks and see, you spend all day washing otherwise and I can't see how for most things 15 mins wouldn't do (tho agree re needing an extra spin for heavier items). I agree, jeans I would probably do on a longer cycle. But lighter materials probably ok?

I do everything on the short wash and give an extra spin like Penguins. Unless its very stained. Exceptions are towels and bedding, teatowels and dishcloths.

I'd be interested to know if it seems to work.

What temperature is it?

Eggrules · 18/03/2012 18:38

I love my 15 min wash and use it a lot. It is 30 degrees 800 spin and 1.5kg so just a few bits. I spin again on the fastest cycle for non delicates.

I find it works better with liquid detergent.

Fuzzywuzzywozabear · 18/03/2012 18:38

I agree with mrsmagnolia check your manual for how much washing - it may only be a pound or two

BloooCowWonders · 19/03/2012 14:40

I have a John Lewis machine which has a 14 min cycle. I use it for tinsing through swim suits and for dd's ballet stuff. Not really worth for much else as the spin is so slow, but it suits delicates.

RightUpMyRue · 19/03/2012 14:43

I wash swimming towels and costumes with it but do need an extra spin as they come out too wet.

MessNessPess · 19/03/2012 14:46

Most items unless stained go on quick wash wihich with extra water is 34mins. DH puts his gardening clothes thru it every night as he gets sweaty as stains are not a problem.

Towels bedding etc goes on a full wash with the short button on so 2:14 > 1:45.

Eggrules · 19/03/2012 20:19

Swimming and football kit washed together and then put on a fast spin. Removed chlorine and smelt really fresh.

pinktrees · 19/03/2012 20:22

I use my 15 min wash for very small loads and/or thing that are delicate. It's great! It does spin slower than a long load so I would not wash something like a towel on a short cycle as it would be much harder to dry.

I use a Quick Wash for most things. It is perfectly adequate and I put in a whole load. Experiment with a quick wash and/or using half as much powder or liquid as it says on the pack. You will soon find out if it's enough.
If you do this most of the time you need to do that hot Maintainance Wash now and again to clean the machine.

lilolilmanchester · 19/03/2012 22:01

thanks everyone, will experiment!

I have a 20 min quick wash at 30 degrees and I use it for stuff that has had dinner slopped down it and needs washing immediately or an item worn for a few hours that is needed again very shortly.
