hello
i tried to browse through the various babysteps threads but am still not sure.

i need help with shoe storage, bikes and scooters and toy storage. And bloody post.

At the moment we have an old chest of drawers in the hallway by the front door shoes but need to reclaim that for clothes. So where/how do you all store shoes? Dp has size 10/11 shoes so we need something that will hold those but also Dc shoes. Between us we have about 16 pairs for everyday wear inc. shoes, trainers, sandals, wellies/boots.

Also under the stairs is a mess with two scooters, a bike, a space hopper plus a few other toys. Haven't really got anywhete else to put these as car boot already has 2 buggies in it. Any ideas?

Also, where do you put paperwork? I have piles of it all over the place including on chest of drawers for shoes. I have a plastic storage filing box which is at the bottom of my wardrobe and not easy to get to besides which it is full to bursting. So i would be more organised about putting stuff away i hope if it was just a bit easier.

We also have a rug by the front door to stop all of us walking too much rubbish in and esp wet feet. But the rug is also messy looking. We have a laminate floor.

It would be SO lovely to have a nice welcoming hallway that I don't have to apologise for so any advice would be great.

Many thanks in advance and apologies for any typos.

Sorry, here

ggirl · 20/03/2012 16:22

hmm if mine wasn't all boxed in I would love the usefullness of boffins desk area
perhaps I could perch Derrida there to chat to

mumat39 · 20/03/2012 18:42

Hello all.
So, curiosity got the better of me and i phoned Deriba this morning to get a ball park figure. they ssked for the hright and eidth of the opening and it measured 73"high by 72" wide. I said I would like a combo of hanging and shelf space. the nice lsdy said that they could do 3 pull out sections with the measurements. the price excluding vat and unpainted came to approx. £2100.00. GULP.

so after dropping Dd off at nursery at 12.15, ds and i whizzed up to the croydon ikea and i bought 2 70cm tall antonius units and 1 102cm antonius units. I also got the Hemnes Shoe cabinet. Got back just in time to pick Dd up. Got home and made a start on the Antonius set. I''added a pic of what I've done so far. I got the box type storage and some wire baskets. I think the wire baskets are going back as i hate Dust and the plastic boxes have lids. So as i said a work in progress but not bad for an afternoons work. te big boxes hold my boots in one and the other will be for muddy wellies. I'm thinking of going to B&q when dp gets back to get one of those plsstic storage shed things for the bikes etc.

Any ideas for the space to the right of the antonius set? Not sure what to put on top either.

thanks again so much. i really wasn't sure what it would look like but I'm SO glad I listened to you. Thanks

I forgot to add that i could get another 70cm high unit in the space to the right and fi.d somewhere else for the Hoover. where do you all keep your hoovers? I might be able to fit it into the boiler cupboard, or is that a bad idea?

OP posts:
BoffinMum · 20/03/2012 20:31

That is mad, £2100. I got a quote like that for resurfacing my existing worktops in the kitchen with granite veneer and I just snorted in disbelief. I don't know how some businesses stay solvent, I really don't.

I would certainly get another 70cm high one and I think the boxes look better than the baskets, so that was a really good idea. I used to keep my hoover in a boiler cupboard. The little triangle lends itself to rolled up rugs or beach towels, perhaps.

I don't know what age your kids are, but if you're getting a storage shed, consider getting a small wooden playhouse instead and keeping the bikes and things in there when the kids aren't playing in it. We bought one 13 years ago and have got an enormous amount of use out of it.

Pannacotta · 20/03/2012 20:41

How much space do you have to the side of the units? Those Antonius units look great btw,

Love BoffinMum's idea re a wooden playhouse as a bike/toy store, think I will borrow that for myself.

Boffin any thoughts on where to find a good model, size and price-wise, which wont displease two small boys?

Pannacotta · 20/03/2012 20:44

Also, meant to say, found some ideas here which might be of help

smalltown thanks for that, would you mind linking? I have looked at the website but there are loads of Mad dashes on there, and nice to get a recommendation.

How old are your DCs btw?

Thanks, thats really helpful....

Glittertwins · 20/03/2012 21:36

I don't suppose anyone has the item number for the tall John Lewis cabinet? I can't find it on their website at all.

mumat39 · 20/03/2012 22:06

Thanks again Boffin. Our garden is 15 m long by 5 m wide, which isn't a bad size but it's on 3 levels so it's difficult to fit things like the paly house. I've seen those before and they look like great fun. Another reason why moving would be a good thing but hey ho.

I'll get another 70cm cabinet. I was in ikea today trying to do some pythagorus to work out whether or not they'd fit. In the end I gave up and just hoped for the best. It's not quite as love a the deriba souliton, but at a 10th of the price it's definitely a really good idea, so thank so much for that. Do you think I should try and cover them with a fabric panel ? The screens you linked to in one of your earlier replies looked lovely but I'm not sure they'd work as the hallway is quite narrow. The rolled up towels sound good. Thanks again so so much for all your advice.

Panacotta, I've not seen those IKEA ideas before. They were all really nice and grown up looking so thanks for those.

Play house.

BoffinMum · 20/03/2012 22:28

If you make matching fabric covers for all the Antonius units I think it would look quite reasonable. Striped ticking might look quite smart. There are loads of unusually coloured ones here.

BoffinMum · 20/03/2012 22:36

Antonius seems to come with optional screening - have you considered getting hold of some of these and adapting them to fit if necessary?

mumat39 · 20/03/2012 23:26

Thanks Boffin.

I looked at those today. They come in kit form with about 3 panels, or maybe 4 and seem to be ok but really nothingy looking, if that makes sense. I've just seen your pics on your profile, and maybe putting doors onto the area to close it off might be the best solution. :)

It was a comparatively cheap and simply way of tidying up the crap in our house. Wink
