What do you use your food processor for???

my old cheap kenwood has died....I hardly used it for anything apart from chopping lots of veg when bulk cooking and the occasional breadcrumbs....mainly as it had a gazillion bits and was enormous so stuffed at the back of the cupboard.....

however do use it enough to replace it, have fallen in love with the idea of a magimix which could fit on the Kitchen work surface and last forever and therefore in theory get used more

.....it is expensive enough to need justification though as dh not convinced wont just be a dust gatherer..... am I deluding myself ? what do you use yours for? if I can get a decent list of things may splash out rather than just get cheapo one again thanks........Smile

All of the above, plus salsa (use the pulse button), bread, cakes. Almost anything!

doubleshotespresso · 12/03/2012 15:16

Coleslaw
Breadcrumbs
Chopping of allsorts
cakes
General baking
yourkshire pudding batter
Pancake batter
Bread occasionally
Soups
Carrot cake ingredients
Smoothies
Batches of salad dressings/sauces etc

So yes -now you've made me think about it- A MAGIMIX IS WELL WORTH THE WORKTOP SPACE!

MoreBeta · 12/03/2012 15:24

I have a Magimix and it lasted 20 years so far. I do chopping, grating and liquidising in it BUT I also make all my cake batters in it as well.

I therefore do not have a food mixer and dont need one. I do have a breadmaker and a hand blender though.

I strongly suspect many of the lovely looking artisan food mixers bought recently will languish in cupboards - whereas I use my Magimix nearly every day.

3rdnparty · 12/03/2012 17:07

oh great ideas- hadn't thought of cake and batter mixing that would be great - is the liquidiser bit ok to make soup? the one on my old processor was rubbish so used a hand blender.....

Taking up space in my cupboards.

gybegirl · 12/03/2012 17:14

I love my magimix. It's the one thing in the kitchen that I would replace if it did die without a doubt. It's been going nearly ten years now. It's used a lot - maybe five days out of seven.

I use it mainly for soups, blending sauces and making pastry (which I used to live in fear of and can now make in about 2 minutes!)

CremeEggThief · 12/03/2012 17:30

I only used mine for soup, so when it died, replaced it with a liquidiser. Sounds like you would get good use from a Magimix, so go for it!

alemci · 12/03/2012 17:38

I have a hand mixer and a food processor which has a liquidiser attachment. someone gave me a separate liquidiser which is on worktop.

it was good for slicing and chopping up cooked beef for instance but it is a faff to get out as it is not always on worktop.

MoreBeta · 12/03/2012 18:34

gybegirl - yes I use mine for pastry too. Its so much easier than all that rubbing in fat by hand nonsense. Shortbread biscuits are a total doddle.

titferbrains · 12/03/2012 18:39

pastry, shredding cabbage, icing, chopping herbs, making dressings, prepping veg for sauces, mayonnaise, certain cake mixes, shredding carrots etc. for salads, breadcrumbs. My magimix sits on the worktop, but out of the way. Wouldn't be without one.

attheendoftheday · 12/03/2012 19:59

I got a magimix for my 21st and it's going strong 9 years later.

It's sadly in a cupboard right now due to us having a miniscule amount of kitchen worktop, so I only get it out for cakes, pastry, or big amounts of chopping.

The food mixer, I love. I use it mostly for baking.

The blender attachment was rarely used, so my husband nabbed it. Now I NEVER use it as he mostly uses it for shredding up foam and mixing it with paint to make grass and trees for his toy model railway that occupies most of my loft. {sob}

3rdnparty · 13/03/2012 09:48

oh dear 2kids - luckily my loft is so full of vital crapthings there is no room for a railway as I'm sure dh/ds would take it over in a second!

well I'm convinced just need to decide which size 3200 or 4200 - there are only 3 of us but I do like to bulk make cake Grin

TunipTheVegemal · 13/03/2012 09:58

I used to use mine mainly for pastry, cakes and pasta dough as it was old and rubbish at slicing but now I have a Kenwood Prospero (stand mixer with processor attachment) I use the mixer part for pastry and cakes as it's easier to wash up, and the processor attachment for grating and for slicing veg when I want it thin (eg potato dauphinoise, mushrooms for lasagne).

It cost me £115 so I am pretty chuffed with how much functionality and beauty I get from it - it is definitely true that if you get something that sits out on the worktop you use it a lot more.

LookAtAllTheseFucksIGive · 14/03/2012 08:47

Hehe. thanks Titfer :o

VickityBoo · 14/03/2012 08:49

All the above, plus the blender for milkshakes and smoothies yum!

hobnob · 26/03/2012 23:33

I have a Magimix and love it. They're brilliant at replacing bits or repairing them - I did a foolish, foolish thing with mine and tried to whizz a frozen-solid lump after which I couldn't get the lid off. The Magimix people came and picked it up, took it away, fixed it and brought it back without charging.

I use it for grating and slicing but mostly for cake mixture, which comes out a treat.
