Help - mattress soaked from dh's night sweat! Bleurgh!

Even through a 600tc sheet and a mattress protector. As soon as I realised what was happening I kicked him out to cool off, but the damage was done. The mattress feels really damp to the touch and as it has a memory foam topper built in, I'm feeling pretty grim about it. He does have these night sweats from time to time (not because he's hot - we can't work out why but his dad does it too) - just never this bad before!

The duvets are airing on the line till I can wash them in my new bigger washing machine.

But what can I do about the mattress? Antibac spray and scrubbing? Is there any point in surface cleaning if his disgusting sweat has seeped right in anyway?

Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.

Ok, well I'd spray it thoroughly with antibac, so that it soaked in as far as the sweat, and see if that worked.

What kind of mattress protector do you have? The quilty ones I find useless. Hippychick do a waterproof one, we've got a few of these, I don't know if anywhere else sells them.

If you can't get the mattress clean then you may have to invest in another one.

As far as the sweating is concerned I really think you would be wise to get him seen by the GP, as it can be a sign of illness.

I hope that didn't sound unfriendly - not intended to!

No not at all! I'm so very very keen to avoid replacing the mattress that I'll try anything!

I've sprayed thoroughly with antibac and scrubbed it in and now it is all airing again. I don't know if it's enough but I'm hoping it will stop me feeling disgusted!

Yeah - I've been on at him about the sweating for a while, but he is quite resistant. He might now because he was the one having to clear it up and realising it was really grim and not normal.

Oh golly well I hope it works and the mattress is salvaged. Fwiw I've done the 'deep spray' technique a few times when I'd neglected to put on a waterproof sheet and ds wet the bed, and we have no smells, so it must do something!

Re the sweating, it might be something as simple as thyroid (I think, don't quote me on that but I'm sure I've heard of it) so he mustn't panic about it being anything terribly bad.

You know what blokes can be like about drs - he claims he's not worried at all, just doesn't see the need to go. I'm not fooled.

It all seems to be going ok now - the dehumdifier is working it's magic I hope and there isn't a smell but there are orangy stains coming out round the edges of the damp patches. There is an old small one from when I had an enormous breastmilk leak which only soaked through a little, so I guess the orange is more to do with the memory foam than the sweat itself. I hate stains. I was so upset about the bm one.

Better look into the Hippychick sheets for later. We have them on the boys beds, but I'd hoped we didn't need them as they are so expensive.

Thanks for your help! Trust me to have a crisis when mn is quiet!

I have no idea if this would work but how about steam cleaning the mattress? My neighbour steam cleans her sofa...

Bettyperske, do the hippychick mattress protectors crackle and rustle? My Dh sweats too, it's gross, he just overheats and sleeps so deeply he doesn't wake. I wouldn't want to sleep on a rustley sheet though, like the good ole' plastic ones we had when we were little.

KatieMiddleton · 11/03/2012 19:40

Is it definitely sweat? You can get double and king sized sheets from Boots that are designed for incontinence that will work for sweat as well as wee id gave thought. They are soft to the touch and less than £25. They do take an age to dry though. We have one on our bed because DS often sleeps in with us and sometimes wets or throws up in bed.

Oh pet you're welcome Smile

Wish I could have been more use! Hippychick ones we've got don't rustle, I got some placky ones before that and couldn't stand it, even for the boys' beds.

They're like soft brushed cotton on one side, then a thin rubbery PVC type coating on the other, so no noise or anything. I use a normal cotton sheet on top, you know, just keep the waterproof ones on underneath in case.

I'm sure they must be available elsewhere. I got ours from Kiddicare online when they were in the sale.
