when you clean the loo......

how long do you leave the bleach/loo cleaner down for? My bottle of bleach recommends to leave it overnight but i always remember reading somewhere that its dangerous to mix bleach with urine so i don't like to do this just in case one of the childrens gets up in the night to use the loo. Then this afternoon i squirted some down and the OH went and used the loo and flushed the bleach away literally two minutes after i left it bloody typically. We don't have any major limescale problems where we live thank god, but even though i'm not OCD i do like to feel its had time to kill all the yucky germs and bacteria down there. I mwan does it really take all night for the bleach to work or can anyone recommend me a good time to clean the loo?

I usually do it before we all go out for the day or for work so its got a good few hours to work.

pushingthesenses · 10/03/2012 19:17

I put a glug down in to the cistern so you get a dilute bleach flush too.

stofstg · 10/03/2012 19:24

my bottle of domestos bleach says leave for 15 minutes so i guess thats the standard time for the bleach to finish off all the germs down there. i normally squirt it around first thing in the morning before i jump in the shower and then after i have brushed my teeth and had a wash its been around 15 minutes so then i flush it away.

PigletJohn · 10/03/2012 22:00

Parazone bleach blocks that you put in the cistern are good. They also slowly dissolve limescale out of the cistern (this is true, try it) and out of the waterways round the rim that are otherwise very difficult to clean

Why do you need to bleach the loo? I use a duck cleaner and a bloo - is this not enough?

Ponders · 10/03/2012 22:59

Ecover loo cleaner only has to be left in for a few mins before brushing & flushing (this suits me because I have a tiny brian & otherwise would wander off & forget & then someone will wee all over it & flush Sad)

milkysmum · 10/03/2012 23:02

what happens if you mix wee and bleach???

StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2012 23:03

I wee on bleach, I'm still alive

Dpn't some people wash their mooncups in flush water, not me I hasten to add. Still...ouch!

StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2012 23:04

Not routinely you understand, dont have a bottle in my bag to squirt down the loos at work. But I don't always flush after cleaning the loo, it stays donw there until the next person uses it

Ponders · 10/03/2012 23:05

unfortunately it doesn't explode all over their bums Grin (might stop them doing it again if it did)

nothing happens - it's just a waste of cleaner, & then you have to do it all again!

StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2012 23:07

How is it a waste? The loo is going to get weed in anyway sooner or later

StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2012 23:07

it's like my mum dindt like us using the bins straight after she'd emptied them :o

oh iswym ponders. I brush at the same time as putting it down but it is more effective if you leave it to work first I ahve noticed

BerryCheesecake · 10/03/2012 23:13

Love this thread. How often do people bleach? Mine usually gets a good squirt when I remember weekly :o

upthealdi · 10/03/2012 23:13

Blimey the first to use the loo post-bleach always weed on it in our house. No explosions yet! Out of interest how fo people who don't use loo brushes cope with, er pebble dashing that flushing alone won't shift?

StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2012 23:13

upthealdi, apparently they scrub them.
I use a brush :o

Ponders · 10/03/2012 23:16

oh I have a brush too, stealth Smile though I find underwater pebbledashing will generally disappear with 2nd/3rd/nth flushing

but above the high water mark you def need to scrub

stofstg · 11/03/2012 08:52

lucy is actually correct in saying that peeing on bleach can be dangerous because the mix of urine and bleach releases the chlorine chemical which can be very poisonous if inhaled sufficiently.

berrycheesecake - i try and squirt bleach around the loo every other day.

Upthealdi - the old loo brush argument has been had on here many a time ha. I use a loo brush. Don't see the problem with them as i just use it to quickly sweep around the loo after the bleach has had time to do its work and then rinse it off when i flush the loo, so no 'bits' left on the bristles and no germs because they will all have perished from the bleach in the first place. Saying that i do change it probably every 2 or 3 months!

FrozenChocolate · 11/03/2012 09:32

So am I doing it wrong by not using bleach then?

CuttedUpPear · 11/03/2012 09:40

FrozenChocolate don't worry, I have never used bleach in my life and my loos are nice and clean.
(Thanks to MNetters and their tips on using wonderful vinegar!)

Spagbolagain · 11/03/2012 09:43

Clean first using disposable brush head thingy from duck people. This removes any pebbledash, smearing and scale. Flush head thing away ensuring no blue stuff left. Then bleach loo, leave for 15 while you clean rest of bathroom. Repeat twice a week or when mother is visiting

FrozenChocolate · 11/03/2012 09:46

Ok, I use the duck and have a 'bloo' for the cistern but no bleach, ever. The loo is okay like that then?
