cleaning hard water marks off shower screens.

Hi all,
Just moved from a house with shower in bath (so a shower curtain) to a house with "proper" showers with perspex screens. We're in a hard water area and within a week we've already got water marks all over the doors of the shower. How can I stop it / what products will clean it properly? The previous owner left some shower spray stuff but it doesn't seem to be doing the job to be honest.
Help!!!

cilit bang is good for limescale, or normal glass cleaner and rub with paper towels.

(or I will ask my cleaner on thursday)

Dotty342kids · 06/03/2012 14:54

thank you!
Gawd, it's great to be in a house with two showers but am not sure about all this extra cleaning!!

I use a squeegee to just dry off the screen after using it - seems to prevent them & only takes 30 secs

Flisspaps · 06/03/2012 14:57

White vinegar.

Years ago I moved from a house with one bathroom to one with a bathroom, en-suite and downstairs cloakroom. I thought it was great to start with and then I had to clean them all!!!!

Nagoo · 06/03/2012 15:07

vinegar does work but it makes your house smell of vinegar Grin

I bought spray but all it does is make you want to massacre your family for failing to spray the screen when you get out of the shower.

quirkychick · 06/03/2012 15:29

Limelite spray. Leave on overnight and wipe off in morning. Use scourer if really bad. You can wipe with window cleaner spray if it's smeary, that contains vinegar but smells better.

You need a squeegee to keep it clean after

Limelite is great for hard water generally.

Dotty342kids · 06/03/2012 16:08

Thanks everyone, I'll invest in some limelite and a squeegee asap.
Elk - I know exactly what you mean. I now have bleach and floor wipes in all three but I have a feeling it'll only be me that actually puts any of them to use!

Use a squeegee after the shower

Once a week spray with Viakil (sp?), rinse off then leave to dry. Perfect and virtually no effort Grin

alemci · 06/03/2012 16:15

the shower screen drives me mad. until you have one you don't realise how awful it is to keep clean.

I don't use it as we have another bathroom but my dd's do and they don't always spray.

i use water and vinegar, a damp cloth, a squeegee and paper towels.

Flisspaps · 06/03/2012 17:20

Nagoo I find the vinegar smell goes after a couple of minutes, although I do live in an old draughty a very well ventilated house.

jalopy · 06/03/2012 19:06

Can I recommend the Lakeland squegee. It's the blue and white one and costs £2.49. Bloody brilliant.

PeanutButterChocolate · 06/03/2012 19:16

I use Vim/Cif and one of those scratchy sponges and an old toothbrush to get into the grooves. DH insists that only way to get an enclosed shower stall properly clean is to get in naked and clean it with the shower ON. Obviously, I make him do that and I have to agree...he gets it far cleaner than I ever could.

Just watch your bits and pieces as it's probably not a good idea to get a bleach-containing cleanser on them Grin.

I'm not sure how our old cleaning lady used to do it but she always had it absolutely gleaming Confused

mrsflower · 06/03/2012 20:06

Cilit Bang once a week.

Thankfully we have a shower curtain now which gets bunged in the washing machine - so much easier!

PeanutButterChocolate · 06/03/2012 21:02

Que est ce que c'est Cilit Bang? (not in UK). Does anyone else think it sounds vaguely rude?

wandawings · 07/03/2012 12:32

Flash ultimate spray. Such good stuff. Spray on, leave for few mins, rub over door and rinse off. Magic stuff.

shopafrolic · 07/03/2012 12:37

Buy yourself a Bathroom e-cloth set and wipe the screen down after every shower - even better than the squeegees and I've tried everything! We live in a hard water area and don't need anything other than these cloths now!

Pannacotta · 07/03/2012 12:41

squeegee and white vinegar/e-cloths to clean.

Dotty342kids · 07/03/2012 14:47

Right, I feel a Lakeland order brewing. I had no idea shower doors would be such a complex issue!

A friend who has OCD tendencies with regard to cleaning swears by the Scotch Brite erasing pad.

I have not tested it as I am a bit of a slattern and also don't live in a hard water area...

valiumredhead · 07/03/2012 15:50

Mr Muscle bathroom cleaner and then after every shower Mr Muscle shower shine spray - it's fantastic!

Dotty342kids · 12/03/2012 12:28

Excellent recommendations, thank you all!

Use a limescale cleaner (Cillit Bang, Viakal, Limebrite) or Barkeeper's Friend, scrub with a sponge and rinse off and squeegee. Don't leave limescale cleaner on any metal parts as it will ruin them. Forget vinegar and lemon juice, unless you use them every single time they don't work.

Whosthemummynow · 11/05/2017 17:14

Viakal. Works wonders

Monkeypuzzle32 · 11/05/2017 17:22

Tesco do a good vinegar spray that works well too. Also I use a protective lotion that makes water run right off the screen but it does need redoing quite often.
