Cleaning a mattress

Looked after a friend's children last night while she stayed with a sick relative. One of the children wet the bed. DD isn't a bedwetter, so not used to dealing with this.

Have washed the sheets & mattress cover, but the mattress was soaked too. Can anyone advise me on how to clean it properly?

put newspaper on it to soak up it and then either wait for it dry out
but if you have to use the bed tonight
turn the mattress over put newspaper on base
and change newspaper every day
really there is not much you can do
buy a plastic sheet for next time

HoneyandHaycorns · 05/03/2012 15:54

Hopefully won't have to use it again tonight, but not sure yet. Don't even know if I can manage to turn it over on my own and DH is away right now. Confused

Will definitely look into buying a plastic sheet next time. Are they available for double beds?

This is our main guest bed, so just hoping it isn't going to smell...

Sorry, meant to say, thanks for the advice.

Aren't you supposed to put bicarb of soda on it to absorb the smell?

HoneyandHaycorns · 05/03/2012 16:01

Ooh, don't know! Just sprinkle it on, do you mean? And then what - leave it or vacuum it up?

Not sure actually! I think I read about it or saw it somewhere...... Confused

I'd try spinkling it on, leaving it for a while and then either hoover or stiff bruch it off.

I suppose it won't do any harm even if it doesn't help!

Frostyfoxy · 05/03/2012 16:16

that should be a stiff brush not bruch!! Not sure what one of them is??!!

longjane · 05/03/2012 18:55

yes you can get plastic sheet for double beds

homeaway · 05/03/2012 19:43

I would steam clean it if you can .

HoneyandHaycorns · 05/03/2012 19:45

Hmm, steam cleaning is a good idea. We have a steam cleaner in the garage that we never use. Blush

Might have to go & dig it out?

Once it is dry bicarb soda mixed with few drops of tea tree oil or lavender oil. sprinkled onto mattress leave for an hour and then hoover.

Brilliant, thank you!
