What does a cleaner do?

Of course I know what a cleaner does, my question is a bit more specific: we have a lady who comes for 3 hours a week to hoover, dust, clean the bathroom and kitchen, these sorts of things. She is great and does a great job.

I thought of asking her to change the bed sheets tomorrow (our bed and guest bed) and mentioned it to DH. He asked "is a cleaner supposed to do that?" He suggested it might be "too personal, like ironing".
Well, I always thought you could ask your cleaner to iron - if both of you agree on that...

We've been in the UK for 5 years, but sometimes we're a bit at loss about these details. The cleaner is Polish, if it makes any difference (I know that back at our home country changing bed sheets is perfectly normal, but anyway).

It may be a stupid question, but I decided to ask it nevertheless. Thanks for your help.

What do you expect someone to do in 3 hrs FGS? I have a cleaner 25 hours a weeks (M-F, 5 hours per day) and she changes linen. Who do you think you are?

needanotherperspective · 28/02/2012 00:37

what a bizarre post cantremember - I think it would be fine to ask her, if she has the time to do it. Shouldn't take that long!

maras2 · 28/02/2012 00:37

Did you mean to be so rude?

Gwlondon · 28/02/2012 00:41

Apparently some cleaners do change bed linen. I know two friends whose cleaners do/have changed linen.

campbelly · 28/02/2012 00:50

Our cleaner changes bed linen quite happily - she first suggested it in fact.
I think that you can ask her to do it, she may say no, but it's not an unreasonable question...

thanks for the responses, I feel better knowing I'm not making an absurd request.

(cantremember, I'm someone who lives in a tiny flat that can be cleaned very quickly. Delighted to meet you :) )

mine does - don't think I ever even asked her - she just does sometimes. And she works 6 hours a week (2 x 3hrs). Not a big deal either way imo - either she will be happy doing it or she won't - no problem in asking the question.

I've always had a cleaner & bed changing is pretty standard, as is ironing if you discuss it. In fact all my cleaners have been very amenable & happy to most things.

Have I walked into AIBU (or did I click on Bounty)? Nice.

I had a cleaner for 3 hours and she did linen. I have a big house but I only got her to clean certain areas so she had time for it. Never bothered with ironing as I saw that as a waste of the time.

bigbadbarry · 28/02/2012 07:40

I usually strip the beds then they out the clean sheets on for me - mine also only have 3 hours.

NightLark · 28/02/2012 07:55

how in the world could someone spend 25 hours a week just cleaning??? Is it a mansion?

googlenut · 28/02/2012 07:58

Can you really have a cleaner for 5 hours a day!!!
