Have I misunderstood FlyLady re windolene?

I've been following the FlyLady routines (not baby steps, just the basic daily routines and missions) and if I've understood her correctly she seems to advocate using windolene to clean half your house, including the whole of the bathroom.

Have I missed something somewhere? Or is it just that windolene is actually very good for cleaning tiles, metal and ceramic, as well as windows? Does it actually clean things, or just make them shiny?

Thanks :)

I ignore the windolene and do e cloths so can't help you!

ImpYCelyn · 27/02/2012 09:05

Do you use a cleaning product as well Carpe, or do you just wipe stuff with the e cloth?

I think it's the "does it actually clean things" aspect that I'm wondering about.

Our grandmothers cleaned with vinegar water as vinegar breaks down grease. Most window cleaners are based on a white vinegar.

I use window cleaner loads since starting FlyLady and when mine runs out will be making my own and adding a few drops of essential oil.

It cleans but doesn't kill (many) germs.

ImpYCelyn · 27/02/2012 09:29

Well as long as it's actually cleaning I'm happy. I didn't realise it was vinegar based.

I used to use vinegar, bicarb, lemon juice etc to clean, but I just got slack about it. Once I've got my routines well established I might start trying to use them more again.

Thanks Waiting :)

window cleaners hate windowlene because it makes the glass smear.

Warm water with half a drop of WUL in it will do a fine job.

ImpYCelyn · 27/02/2012 10:07

WUL?

No products with the e-cloth at all other than hot water.

I swish and swipe with an e-cloth daily for sinks and worktops (although the loo gets a flash wipe and full scrub with toilet duck) and then do a weekly blitz with dettol anti-bac spray.

Haven't died of any nasty diseases lately, and DS doesn't wheeze as much.

PigletJohn - doh, yes that's really obvious now Blush baby brain strikes again!

Carpe - that sounds like a good way of doing it. The loo here gets a flash wipe too, I couldn't take not using something strong on it. Like the idea of a weekly blitz too.

windowlene is fine for ceramics - windows are glass and glass is a ceramic. :)

(weird) Confused

LadyWellian · 27/02/2012 12:51

Does it mean generic window cleaning stuff that you can see through and is basically vinegar like everyone else said, or does it mean 'proper' Windowlene, which is creamy pink stuff like this?

LadyWellian · 27/02/2012 12:53

Also apparently window-cleaning stuff is bad for double-glazed windows as it corrodes the gaskets. But if window-cleaning stuff is basically vinegar would it not follow that vinegar would be bad for the gaskets too?

ImpYCelyn · 27/02/2012 13:49

I had no idea LadyW. My branded Windolene is blue, like generic window cleaner. It doesn't say on the site which she means. But I just checked mine and it claims to clean with vinegar.

I didn't know that about window-cleaner and double glazing. I'll have to look into it.

you can still get the original windolene online, I remember when I worked as a lift driver in Scarborough in the 80s, the boss asked me to clean the trams windows, I couldn't believe it when he gave a small dish and put a very small amount of Windolene in it and added about 6 times as much water, I said that would never do all the trams windows but he said just try it, he was right, by making it really thin you only need a tiny amount ans also it works much better that way instead of straight from the bottle.

Whinginadeville · 16/06/2021 07:10

I use a little windowlene mixed with very hot water to clean my diamonds it's a fab cleaner
