whiter whites?

I can't believe my life has come to the point where I do actually care how white my whites are...

can someone recommend me a wonder-product that will get DS's school polo tops restored from chewing-gum grey? I only wash white with white. I wash at 40, should it be hotter?

what else can I do?

Are you in a hard water area? I am and although I'm very careful about washing whites they still look 'poisoned' as my mother would say.

I find washing with biological powder better than non bio, and I add a tablespoon of soda crystals with the powder. This helps but doesn't stop the problem all together. I wash at 40 too.

You can buy a water softner for the house which the water filters through before you use it, but they are not cheap. I'm looking into one for my house.

Other than that I'll join you shaking your fist - 'tis not your fault!!

Laundry bleach

Nagoo · 26/02/2012 16:37

Is that the glo-white stuff? I bought that. Shite. Ariel whitener stuff? shite. Vanish? shite.

I don't mind soaking them in a vat for a while in some super powder, if they will blind me when I get them out Grin

Napisan. Can't beat it.

purplewithred · 26/02/2012 16:39

soak them in some real bleach solution then, some good plain BLEACH mixed with water. i am sure there are instructions about how you should do it on the bottle. Just don't get it on anything else.

Nagoo · 26/02/2012 16:55

Hmm I have it in my head that bleach will send them yellowish?

I might try napisan again. I convinced myself that sunshine was doing all the good work on the nappies. No sunshine here yet though.

60 degree wash - good quality bio powder ( am into Ariel at the moment) forget cheaper powders and don't go for gels - line dry in sun ( not that easy !), your whites will be glowing in no time at all !

Nagoo · 26/02/2012 18:54

Ok, so I'm going to blame my persil non-bio.

I have a baby with dry skin, so looks like I'm going to have to split the wash Hmm

have you done the exciting maintenance wash?

with whites-only washes, Persil non-bio is very good. Persil Bio is even better. It's true, Persil really does wash whiter.

if your whites are grey, I can't help thinking that once upon a time, they went through the machine with something that wasn't white.

GoosDoorIsAlwaysOpen · 03/03/2012 06:33

I did do the exciting maintenance wash :)

I have switched to aerial bio actiflift powder (I went on Which. Dh's stupid subscription the he won't cancel might as well get used) it was on offer :)

Persil Non-Bio liqiud is shiiiiiiiiit by comparison. My whites are much better only after being washed once. I don't like the smell though. Hmm

Which says powders are much better, and it is true IME.

GoosDoorIsAlwaysOpen · 03/03/2012 06:34

Oh, and I went up to 60. Everything is so clean!

OlympicEater · 03/03/2012 06:39

Persil on a 60 has made big big difference to our whites. Previously used whatever was on offer on a 40 and it was coming out a bit grey.

lisianthus · 03/03/2012 10:07

And chuck half a lemon into the drum with the clothes.

PigletJohn · 03/03/2012 20:28

the liquids are non-bleaching, so the Persil powders are better for whites, and the liquids for darks or colours.
