Have always wanted a real fire, really sick to death of our 20 yr old gas fire. We are seriously thinking of having one put in, but am getting the feeling from others that our room is too small and we will boil! We love the look of a Swedish one which is tall and modern, it has a 5kg ouput, our room is 13x13. Any advice please, we are now not sure if it would be sensible. My dh feels the cold so badly since he has been on chemo.

That's about the size of my room. Once the fire has caught, I just all but close the vents. The fire is only ever on in the evenings though.

We have a yeoman CL5 and a room roughly the same as you and we are lovely and toastie! We just keep a moderate fire on in the evenings( daytime on cold weekends too) using compressed sawdust logs which burn better than wood imo. Leave the room door open to let the heat circulate and you won't get too hot. Our gas bill is teeny! Well worth it!

Just be aware that your dh could end up like mine and forage in skips for wood. He goes out for a pint and I wake up the next morning to see wood pallets in my front garden. You have been warned!!!

We have a Morso in our lounge and a hunter in the back room , very little if any heating on during the day - if it gets too hot with door closes open and heat the house! Would recommend a vent in the room to allow the stove to use cool air from outside - or open the window vent when in use to prevent the stove pulling hot air from in the house. Beware your other half will travel the country spotting fallen trees suitable for burning and may invest in a chainsaw!!!

Aga little wenlock love them. If it toobhot, turn it down. Or open internal doors

Thanks for your replies, I think we should go ahead, I have always wanted to sit in front of my own "proper" fire, can always open a window!!

Nothing nicer than a real fire.....snowing outside, you're all snuggled up inside...GO ON!!!! I love foraging for wood!

smartiesrule · 27/02/2012 16:26

You may need a shed or suchlike to put the wood in. You get through a lot more wood than you think.

triplets · 27/02/2012 22:59

Your comments have made up my mind, and even better we got a new quote in today, same stove everything and it was £1400 cheaper!!

YEY!!! You'll love it! Definately get a shed in to store your wood & if you get it installed now & buy wood over the summer its a bit cheaper so you will be ready for the winter.

Rainydayagain · 28/02/2012 18:23

Should have said the down side to a wood burning stove is huge amounts of dust in your house and the bits of the boody wood gets everywhere.

triplets · 28/02/2012 23:12

Its a dusty house anyway.............small price to pay for the utter bliss of a real fire. Since my dh has been on chemo he is freezing all the time, it would be lovely for him.

Don't let dust put you off! Go for it & I hope your DH is well xx

Rainydayagain · 29/02/2012 17:34

Good sorry didn't want to put you off we habe several and love them. Its just suprising, if your a cream carpet type of person worth knowing.

triplets · 29/02/2012 22:52

We actually do have a cream carpet:o
Thanks Yankee, he is battling on. They are monitoring a new poss lung tumour, it just goes on and on. He has had so much chemo in the last 4 yrs, used to be the one who was always opening windows, now he sits with 3/4 layers on. It will be a treat:)
