Paint colour advice needed for kitchen please

Help! I need some advice from any of you out there who have confidence with colour and know what works. We've just had a lovely new kitchen installed - high gloss white units, dark wooden worktops and a composite white island, plus a beautiful dark wooden floor. The painter is booked but I'm running out of time and have no confidence in what colour to paint the walls. Its a big kitchen/diner with high ceilings and a nice big window, but it's a north facing room so doesn't get direct sunlight. Would a shade of white work? F & B or any other. I'd really welcome any advice going.

Pointing. Keep it light.

HettyKett · 21/02/2012 22:43

A green would be wonderful. Does it look onto the garden or street?

Love this
Also good
this is my favourite. Maybe a bit much for you?
Naice white-green if you must.

Dulux jasmine white

Thanks so much for your suggestions - very grateful. We're in a third floor Victorian flat in Edinburgh so don't look onto either garden or street. To compensate for lack of sunlight the room looks out at Edinburgh castle - specially nice at night. We've got Pointing on woodwork elsewhere so hadn't thought of it for walls but we know we like it. Pigeon and Chappell Green are lovely both, but I find the Cooking Apple Green a bit much. I'm not averse to colour, just have no confidence and dread it looking a total mis-match disaster - hence the need for your advice. Lack of confidence leads to total indecision and I can't face matchpot hell!

Chappell Green really would be perfect. Promise.

HettyKett · 21/02/2012 23:39

Oh, and you can't really mismatch with white kitchen and dark wood floor IMO.

In any case, If I were you I'd do pointing on the ceiling rather than white. The woodwork colour would be too isolated if the ceiling is harsh white ( = matched to the kitchen). It'd make much more difference to the feel rather than the overall look IYSWIM. Softer and more pulled together.

Chubfuddler · 22/02/2012 07:44

I had cooking apple green in a north facing kitchen and it really didn't work with the cold light. We have pointing now with off white units and limestone colour rules and it is lovely.

Bonsoir · 22/02/2012 08:45

A warm grey with a very slight blue tinge would be good.

Bonsoir · 22/02/2012 08:46

Green would be frightful, by the way, in a north facing room with white units.

teta · 22/02/2012 12:09

Strong white or Skimming Stone or Elephants breath or Light Blue.I have all of them in my kitchen in varying degrees. The 'greys' will add a touch of warmth [Skimming Stone and elephants Breath].Strong white is a very pale grey that is a really good neutral.

jalopy · 22/02/2012 16:55

I'd be careful with grey in a north facing room.

lulu05 · 22/02/2012 18:32

And I'd stay away from blue in a north facing room! We've just been visiting kitchens as mid renovation of a Georgian property ATM and my two favourites have green kitchen units which I was surprised by. Think Hetty's suggestions are great.

Sanesometimes1 · 26/02/2012 19:34

I would suggest something really really bright on 1 feature wall and do the rest in neutral off white ish shade - colour co-ordinate accessories with your bright wall - I really want to suggest a bright raspberry colour but am a bit worried that you'll re-coil in horror !!! lol

Do you have a F&B showroom near you? They are great at advising. Take a picture of your kitchen and they will help you.

I made a well worn path to Battersea when we did all our walls.

White Tie (Farrow and Ball) would be nice in a North facing room. We have it in a very light room, and it is a bit too yellow. Pointing is a safe bet.
