Why are wooden letters so popular?... What are your decorative bugbears?

One of my pet hates are the ubiquitous decorative wooden letters featured in every homes magazine and style magazine since forever. They just seem so unoriginal to me especially when they spell out the action to be performed in the room they are put in, i.e E....A....T in the kitchen, L....O...V...E in the bedroom, C...R...A...P in the loo and so on as if the inhabitants might forget what happens where without 3 foot high gold letters reminding them at every possible occasion.
I also have a dislike of most wall transfers and also of feature walls decorated with flock or metallic wallpaper - stinks of 'Chavez' IMHO.

What decorative horrors make you shudder?

GetDownNesbitt · 17/02/2012 21:32

Oh dear.

Telly on the wall - yup
Leather FFS sofa - yup
Picture of the kids (not venture, but almost) - yup
A Buddha on the mantelpiece - yup

Ah well. I like my room.

SuePurblybilt · 17/02/2012 21:33

God yes, the massive pics of the rat pack/Audrey/Marilyn. From people who would struggle to name three of their films. Always a winner.

I was there with dh too but he took the photos, quite a nice one of Maceys:o
Was thinking of a pale blue/white diner set,it is an old edwardian terrace. rest of house quite traditional, just thought we'd do something different in the kitchen.

JasperJohns · 17/02/2012 21:40

We have some b&w photos artfully leaning on a picture shelf, mis-matched but same colour frames, natch.

They have all been taken by my dh. Empire State building, Yosemite, Napier NZ, Taj Mahal blah blah. But I feel he has rendered them very naff by 'colour popping' a couple of them.

This is probably a grave style faux pas?

pineapple70 · 17/02/2012 21:43

Oh no!!! We just spent a fortune on wenge. I want to cry.

mjawch · 17/02/2012 21:50

contempory floral wallpaper! I just moved house and its in my living room... eurghhhh. I am swapping it to some lovely Cath Kidston wallpaper, the cowboy one :D My mum says its for boys bedrooms, but I love that cowboy print, so tough titty!

JasperJohns · 17/02/2012 21:53

My ds has the CK cowboy print sleeping bag and my dad has the mug!

I can't imagine it as your living room wallpaper! Sounds bonkers, but at least it's a bit different - and not floral!

fortyplus · 17/02/2012 21:54

What about those canvas prints that are split into three separate ones you hang side by side... wtf is that all about??

mjawch · 17/02/2012 21:56

floral curtains n wooden pelmets... even worse if in a golden yellow... looks like caravan decor!

fortyplus · 17/02/2012 21:57

Or 'Branch Decor Wall Art' Pleeeeease tell me no one really buys that shit! Grin

mjawch · 17/02/2012 21:57

I have a changing bag, shopping bag, mug, my ds1 has a oilcloth coat, ds2 a baby bowl and plate set, dd a tshirt, I made bunting too, all in cowboy lol.... its an addiction I believe. xx

mjawch · 17/02/2012 21:59

hate those metal wall arts! OH I KNOW SOMETHING I REALLY HATE!!!! GLASS BRICKS!

fortyplus · 17/02/2012 21:59

Ok - so who's got a Waterfall Triptych Canvas?

fortyplus · 17/02/2012 22:02

For only £99.99 you can have the most expensive light in the Argos catalogue

TitWillow · 17/02/2012 22:04

Well I have magnolia walls, white woodwork and beige carpets. it doesn't mean I have no imagination. It means that my landlord has none.

JasperJohns · 17/02/2012 22:04

The 'branch decor wall art' comments are obviously not from MNers.

.. we bought two and hung them in the alcoves looks really nice

Nuff said.

mjawch · 17/02/2012 22:10

lol!!!!

droves · 17/02/2012 22:14

Open plan - house stinks of whatever you've been cooking , and it's cold ...ok in Bahamas and nice hot places , but not uk.

Extra large patterned wall paper - its just not very nice and usually floral

Round dining tables , unless they are George nakashima style

Fake Tiffany lamps in modern rooms - if your going to go art deco then go art deco darling , get a real one FFs.

Cheap leather sofas , chairs , anything .- its vile , sort of plasticky coating and cracks very badly after a couple of years ...decent leather furniture doesn't , it ages as its better quality leather .

Cheap shiny laminate - enough said .

Vertical blinds - good for offices , not much else.

Next furniture. - overpriced shite .

Veneer furniture - cheap yet still overpriced shite

Toilet brushes in marble holders - toilet brushes are skankiest things ever to be invented , shoving it in a marble holder doesn't make it any less skanky .They will never be objects of desire .

Bathroom rugs - piss collectors ...mils seem to love them ???? Why ? What's loveable about a urine soaking up mat ...just wash the sodding floor if you don't want to stand in piss puddles , or train your males to aim better .

Classical style garden statues - nice if in grounds of a stately home ...stupid if on lawn of a 1960s semi .

Front door mats that say welcome - seriously your welcoming everything , the e-on salesman , the takeaway menu delivery person , the better where catalogue , next doors cat that likes to piss up your driveway .

Mahogany furniture - its like living in a very old , pub.

And finally coloured/ painted ceilings ...the only ceiling that can get away with that is the sistine chapel , and you are not Michelangelo.

droves · 17/02/2012 22:20

Oh and twee paper callenders ....with dull prints ...

I have one of these , we get one every year ...from mil .

Even though I have told her I'm looking for a nice callenders , that had rotating dates .

I am dying to fire up the barbecue , and burn the damn thing

Devora · 17/02/2012 22:26

Jack Vettriano probably goes without saying. But I'll say it anyway.
