Why are wooden letters so popular?... What are your decorative bugbears?

One of my pet hates are the ubiquitous decorative wooden letters featured in every homes magazine and style magazine since forever. They just seem so unoriginal to me especially when they spell out the action to be performed in the room they are put in, i.e E....A....T in the kitchen, L....O...V...E in the bedroom, C...R...A...P in the loo and so on as if the inhabitants might forget what happens where without 3 foot high gold letters reminding them at every possible occasion.
I also have a dislike of most wall transfers and also of feature walls decorated with flock or metallic wallpaper - stinks of 'Chavez' IMHO.

What decorative horrors make you shudder?

Really Big coffee tables in dark wood like wenge which hold glossy coffee-table books no-one ever looks at and I will inevitably end up bashing my shins on all the time.

Hate L-O-V-E lettering on mantelpieces, etc, too. I was looking at decor stuff for my wedding and had to stop myself from buying 'Just Married' or 'Mr and Mrs' signs at the last minute. I don't like 'em, but somehow I felt compelled to buy them because I thought 'Oh that'll look nice at the wedding'. Stupid girl.

SuePurblybilt · 15/02/2012 19:06

The word WENGE is making me weep Grin

redglow · 15/02/2012 19:08

How can anybody not like Emma bridgewater?

pommedechocolat · 15/02/2012 19:09

Union Jack
Lovehearts everywhere that have no function/purpose other than making everywhere look like a 6 year old girl's bedroom
Not keen on Keep Calm either. So ubiquitous now and art/posters should always be a bit more thoughtful than that.

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 15/02/2012 19:17

Brown leather bedframes
Fitted mirrored wardrobes
Anything brass
Feature walls...have always hated them

Blush do have a keep calm cushion though.

HillyWallaby · 15/02/2012 19:18

Wenge is pronounced When-Gay. I wasn't sure whether to be amused, delighted or devastated when I found that out. I was quite fond of calling it wenge to rhyme with flange.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 15/02/2012 19:20

Picture rails in 1970's semi's.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2012 19:20

Right, none of you lot are coming round to my house. I have carpets, a feature wall, a sofa from DFS, fitted mirror wardrobes, and all of the downstairs is B&Q Ivory. [sob]

AmazingBouncingFerret · 15/02/2012 19:22

Grin Sparkling, I have DFS sofa, Argos furniture, a feature wall plus fairy lights on one of my pot plants!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/02/2012 19:23

As I sit on my brown leather sofa, opposite my feature wall and kick off my slippers onto my wooden floor, isn't it lucky that I don't give two fucks what anyone else thinks? :o

SuePurblybilt · 15/02/2012 19:23

Oh, is whengay better or worse? I was saying wenge (to rhyme with flange) as well.
I like both.

Saw leather bedframes in the window of Poundland today, down to £70.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2012 19:24

Ooh, I have just noticed I haven't switched my twigs on Amazing. Grin

AmazingBouncingFerret · 15/02/2012 19:25

Poundland? Confused I thought that was where everything is a £1. Or am I not getting the joke? Grin

SuePurblybilt · 15/02/2012 19:27

Oh I dunno, one of the pound shops in Exeter,I call them all Poundland. Most things are more than £1 in them.

squishysquashy · 15/02/2012 19:28

Nooooo

Pinot · 15/02/2012 19:42

Wenge to rhyme with flange Grin

I hate:

Indian sheesham wood tables

Buddhas all over the fecking place

Venture shit

Cheap laminate floorboards

Carpet in the loo

Faux leather DVD holder things

Anything too matchy-matchy.

I like:

Art Deco

Crystal stuff

Oak stuff

Random shizzle

SuePurblybilt · 15/02/2012 19:47

What do we call that fakey wood that looks like it's made from three types? Like Elizabeth Duke three coloured gold jewellery Grin or cheap stripy highlights? Is that Wenge?
Anyway, that. Usually comes in super-chunky style, with fake rivets and random metal bits. Sideboards and tables the most common use.

Francagoestohollywood · 15/02/2012 19:47

What were you doing on Sidwell st Suepurblybuilt? Is there still that furniture shop before the Odeon, which was stuck in 1979?

SuePurblybilt · 15/02/2012 19:49

I was shopping and museuming Grin.
I dunno re furniture shop, it was bloody RAMMED today and I noticed nothing.

Pinot · 15/02/2012 19:50

Sue that's sheesham! I hate! Wenge is darkdark brown.

BendyBob · 15/02/2012 19:52

Those letters are very annoying. Funny how they never spell out S-M-U-G.

Francagoestohollywood · 15/02/2012 19:55

Oh, the new museum! I saw the pics on the Express and Echo website... Grin. I still have weird dreams featuring the old Tesco in iudwell st.

SuePurblybilt · 15/02/2012 19:55

See, I gets me furniture from skips.

Francagoestohollywood · 15/02/2012 20:00

Are you one of those people who manage to find lovely pieces of furniture from skips? I am in awe.

NW20 · 15/02/2012 20:06

Country style, Cath Kidston chintzy crap makes me want to vomit. How anyone under 70 can have this in their house is beyond me.

Accent colour canvas pictures of nothing. Or in fact any boring, random pictures that have no relevance and look like they have just been hung to cover a wall rather than because they actually have any meaning to anyone. Next sell A LOT of these, although I don't dislike Next at all.

That said; anyone whose house is basically decorated straight out of the Next catalogue with absolutely no imagination or personal thought.

Emma Bridgewater in excess. The odd mug is fine but the whole crockery set is cringeworthy.

ANY type of ornament that is sold in collections, regardless of how expensive they are, Lladro etc.

I don't know how anyone can hate too many photographs, I love having lots of photographs on display and I love looking at other people's in their houses.
