I can put the cast iron bits from my cooker into a dishwasher can't I?

Is there any reason I can't? Plus all the other bits that go on the gas burners? Will the dishwasher clean them properly or can it remove some sort of coating?

Clueless

We do and they're fine.

I do - no probs.

you can. the enamel may lose its shine though.

it depends if it is coated with enamel or not. my range cooker has cast iron supports and they can't go in the dishwasher. my mother's cooker has enamel coated supports and they go in the dishwasher and come out really well.

also be careful about putting the gas ring surrounds in the dishwasher - these are usually made of aluminium which will discolour badly if put in the dishwasher.

Oh. Was all happy and raring to go with giving the cooker its annual clean and then I read the 2 latest posts. Grr. They're not enamel coated. Bugger

plain cast iron (grey and grainy) can be put in the dishwasher, but will rust, so you have to take them out imediately, reub with a green nylon scourer to remove any orange rust marks, and rub over with cooking oil, just enough to make the surface darker and shiner. This will protect from rust temporarily.

Cast iron is usually very thick, so you will not get enough rust to do more than cosmetic marks.
