I want to make a twin bedroom for my children.

I have decided to get 2 divan beds.

How do I make divan beds look gorgeous?

Any ideas or websites for inspiration?

You have to get those special little swan nappies tho or they make a bit of a mess.

SilentBoob · 13/02/2012 11:25

I assumed they'd be dead swans. Otherwise wouldn't they object to being stapled to the divans?

I've always loved the children's bedrooms in Cyrillus

Oops, didn't link to the right bit! Here's the catalogue

I always find that Zara Home Kids has something nice for the children's bedrooms, be it a cushion, or a duvet cover, or a throw.

Thank you both for links and ideas.

So you think it's really just down to bedding then? A valance to hide the ugly bit of the divan?

I was wondering about a headboard stencilled onto the wall... or... their names above each bed... or, well, I don;t know really hence asking. I had a divan 20 years ago and it wore a frilly cotton skirt to hide the ugly bit - I wondered if we had progressed since then.

What about instead of a valance sheet, getting vintage quilts or (if you can sew, I can't) get lots of remnants/large scraps of lovely/vintage fabrics to make into a patchwwork, and then lay the whole thing over the divan base? You could get away with damaged quilts if the tear/stain is in the middle where the mattress will hide it.

In my mind that looks oh so stylish.

I think it's more about the overall look - the bedding coordinating with the "feel" of the room.

If you look at the bedrooms in the cyrillus interiors catalogue, the walls and floors are very plain, but the rooms seem cosy because the bedding, curtains and accessories all coordinate!

I think you first need to pick a theme, then a colour scheme and work from there.

My friend did a nautical theme for her kids' room - all white and navy. She made a boat-style blind, a port-hole shaped mirror etc. It looked great!

I've also seen a beachy theme work well - beige and eggshell blue, with seashells etc.
Pink and feminine may work for girls, depending on how girly they are :)

DD2 lives in a double divan, this is what we've learnt in the last 7 years.

Buy a storage divan, you will always be tempted to another pretty set of bedding.
Also older DC like friends to sleep so you want some where for spare quilts and airbeds.

Valances rock, DCs get their bottom sheets dirty. You do not want a big frilled sheet to wash each time.

Also the catalogue pictures with the huge over hanging quilts look great. In reality they end up on the floor in the middle of the night and frozen child wakes you up.
Light single quilts are far better, DCs can pull them back over themselves.
DD has a pink fleece blanket as well if she's cold.

Padded bed heads and cushions, older DCs like to sit on their beds to read and play on their gadgets. DD loathed the turned pine pillar thing that came with the bed.

Bedside tables with rounded corners, it appears to be perfectly possible to fall out of even a double bedConfused

Don't bother with fancy murals, keep the Walls fairly plain. They look daft when you move the furniture, are pain to paint over and it's sad doing it.
