Done to death I know - been so impressed with Dyson handheld am thinking of going back to Dyson hoover - yes or no?

Had a couple of Dyson's in the past. Thought they were pretty good as hoovers and very usable. Always had uprights. No complaints. However, got a bit pissed off with the reliability and them breaking after a year or so. Was persuaded to get a Miele S5 which I absolutely hate. It is great as a hoover, excellent reliability but just so annoying to use. It falls down stairs on me, everytime I move it whacks me in the heels, the hose falls over, it whacks into everything, gets twisted up and you can't easily turn round with it.

In fairness it is excellent at cleaning and many of these gripes might be applicable to all cylinders - I just cant get on with them and should have stuck to upright.

I got one of the new Dyson handhelds last year - DC35, and was so impressed was thinking of getting a Dyson upright again (Miele must be on last legs - I give it so much abuse). If yes, which one? ball or not, can you recommend?

If no - why not?

S5

Miele also make uprights.

In Which tests, the top 5 best-buy uprights are Miele.

Dyson comes 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th. Sebo is 8th.

I know, I should really get a Miele upright but - and this is shallow I know, I can't bear to I don't think as they look so 70's hotel-granny-cleaning-swirly-carpets. Also, I cant tell you how much I hate my Miele cyclinder - even though I apreciate it is good at hoovering.

Which was the highest rated Dyson upright (no 6)? If you don't mind looking for me -how recent was the Which test?

the dysons were all much of a muchness. The Dyson
DC25 Ball Animal scored 1% more than the next one.

If you send me £25, I will make a label saying "Dyson" that you can glue to the front of a Miele vac.

befuzzled · 09/02/2012 00:45

ha ha - I could even use the label of an old broken Dyson I have in the garage.

In my defense currently when I empty the bag on the Miele I have to empty it out on a newspaper in the garden to fish out all the bits of Lego/playmobil etc which is a bit gross. I am thinking going back to the Dyson cylinder where I can see immediately what has been sucked up might be easier and easier to retrieve it.

For about £80 Dyson will come and service your old Dyson for you. It might be worth calling them out to look at your garaged-Dyson, as apparently they replace all old/broken parts until its fixed and good as new.

Otherwise, my Dyson allergy/animal is 7 years old now and still works fine - I've been thinking it might benefit from some TLC a service though. :)

leeloo1 · 09/02/2012 09:21

Oh and I bought the handheld (think it was DC35 too) - and am loving it on stairs! The best bit though is that DS (who is 3) completely loves it and will happily hoover for me. Grin

lynniep · 09/02/2012 09:26

I just have to say we have a dyson upright (DC27 multifloor animal I think) that we bought last year in a fit of GAAAH ALL OUR VACCUUM CLEANERS BREAK AFTER A YEAR LETS GET A DECENT ONE!...

...and we hate the bl**dy thing. Its too heavy. We cant use the hose attachment without a battle because its too stiff. DH actually went out last week and bought a cheapo cyllinder vacuum for the stairs, because he just couldnt face attempting to use the Dyson again.

The 2yo loves it. Puts it to bed on a cushion overnight. He's a bit of a nutter though and he's not the one doing the cleaning...

befuzzled · 09/02/2012 12:07

it funny isnt it people love or hate? I do worry the big ones will be too heavy for me (short). The DC35 is incredible though I have to say - particularly for stairs. My dc think it is a Star Wars lightsaber/gun hybrid and beg to hoover up their own mess - astounding side effect Dyson have pulled off there it seems.

My DC35 tip is, if it seems to lose ability to pick things up after awhile, use a 10p to unlock the brush, slide it out, give it a good clean - good as new!

Any positive stories of Dyson uprights?

I had a Dyson for a while and never got on with it, always getting blocked or cutting out.

Last time I hoovered my car it stopped working. I asked my dh to look at it to mend it and when he took it apart there was a pair of my knickers stuck in the tube! Took me ages to get out of that one, good job he trusts me!

I now have a Henry which is fantastic and never gets blocked.

Our trusty 7 year old Miele was broken by my builders. It coped with plenty, but drew the line at builders rubble. :(

Dysons were on offer so we got one. Pile of shite it is. Hate the wretched thing. Hardly picks up anything. Tends to just ping bits out randomly so never seem to have completely clean carpet. Hate hate hate the bloody thing. All style, no substance.

My mother loves her hand held one and I can see is good for a handheld. But for normal day to day hoovering, the miele is streets ahead. I like the cylinder ones personally, but the Miele uprights are good too.

mamijacacalys · 10/02/2012 11:54

On my second Dyson cylinder. Is 3 years old. One prior to that was about 7 years old and had survived heavy duty cleaning when we built our extension around the time it was 3 or 4.
My MIL had one of the first Dyson cylinders that came out in the 90s (DC02?) and it only died last year.
As long as you clean the filters regularly (I have a spare and change mine when I empty it, so approx once a month) then IME they are fine.
My mum, OTOH, had an upright cat and dog Dyson (as she has pets) and it was useless - bits broke off cord holder etc. I think it only lasted a year or so.
HTH Smile

PigletJohn · 10/02/2012 14:36

good idea about the filters (not just for Dyson)

With the Miele, you get a set of filters with each pack of bags. I am very mean and like to wash the filters so I have plenty spare, and can change the filter each time I change the bag. Some people like to put a drop of lavender oil or something on the puffy filter.

CeliaFate · 10/02/2012 14:55

I've got this one and it's fantastic. It's really light (I can carry it upstairs whilst hoovering each one) and very powerful. Love it.

anniewoo · 13/02/2012 00:54

Love my miele cat and dog and my dyson hand held
