Our thermostat is set at 18. Most of the house is plenty warm enough. Am currently sat about 3 foot from the (single glazed) lounge window though and the cold is radiating! (if that maked sense..).

I'm seriously impressed with whatever insulation the builders used when they built our home (the only thing I am impressed with Angry). Living room is currently 18 degrees according to DH's infra red thermometer and we haven't had the heating on at all this winter. It did drop to 17 degrees briefly during the snow on Sunday. A little colder than we would usually have it (I normally have the thermostat set to 20), but it's perfectly liveable (with a throw when sat on the sofa) and I'm enjoying the savings in the gas bill!

15 and thats the warmest it has been for days!! normally between 11 and 13... we use a wood burning stove to heat the house and it does get chilly sometimes!

PigletJohn · 09/02/2012 21:15

21

For some reason, 18C feels comfortable in the morning, but not in the evening. A programmable stat takes care of it.

CroissantNeuf · 09/02/2012 21:21

The thermometer reading (on the Eon energy use gadgetty-thing) says 19 degrees.

I'm definitely warm enough, probably helped by the large glass of red I've just had !

WundaWumman · 12/02/2012 12:40

Me again, still cold! Well the radiators are v hot, there is just too much space to heat I think. We have an open fire - so no responsibility for the landlord. Thanks for your replies - useful research for my chat with landlord actually!

We set ours at 21 and down to 20 when we go to bed. Very small house.

Molehillmountain · 12/02/2012 18:57

Too flipping hot! I was born to live in Scandinavia!

cminor · 12/02/2012 21:09

Do people leave the heat on at night in winter? I never have done and there is ice inside the windows on cold mornings. I can't believe babies sleep in just 2 tog gro-bags but suppose ok if the house is heated all night. God knows what that must cost.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 12/02/2012 21:17

About 24 because we have got the fire on. The rest of the house is about 19.

We left the heating on last night because it was so cold, but that is the only night we have done it this winter.
Our bedroom goes down to about 15/16 overnight, DS1's bedroom gets a degree or two cooler.

We have good insulation, double glazing and a boiler that is only 3 years old so the bills aren't too big. I would rather spend an extra £15-20 a month and be warm, although I appreciate that we are lucky to be able to make that choice.

countessbabycham · 12/02/2012 21:21

Its like a furnace in here.
DH sees it as some sort of challenge to build a coal fire you can smelt in....

TheFallenMadonna · 12/02/2012 21:23

countessbabycham · 12/02/2012 21:26

I've always thought the rough rule to aim for is 21 in living rooms and 18 in bedrooms.

I find 18 ish fine if I'm busy but really I'm only properly warm when sitting down watching telly or sewing at 24.

ProlificYoungGentlemenBreeder · 12/02/2012 21:32

18/19 upstairs probably about 22 downstairs with the fire on.

Molehillmountain · 12/02/2012 21:54

We play thermostat games in our house - I turn it down, dh turns it up! We don't really notice we're doing it most of the time! Our thermostat settings bear no relation to the actual temperature and because it's in the wrong place, upstairs will be boiling whilst downstairs struggles to stay warm.

gaelicsheep · 12/02/2012 23:27

cminor We leave an electric heater on minimum in our room overnight to maintain it at 16-18 degrees. DD sleeps in pyjamas and a 2 tog grobag and would kick off any other covers we tried to put over her. I tend to turn off the heater in DS's bedroom when we go to bed. But our upstairs rooms are well insulated and require minimal input to maintain a good temperature.
