How do you get as much of the dust out of the air as possible?

I damp dust not very frequently, enough so that if people pop around I'm not worried they can see dust lying around.
We do sometimes open the windows to give the place an airing.

My bedroom window lets in a lot of sun and light and I can often see lots and lots of dust motes in the air. I'm an asthmatic so want to keep dust levels down. I'm on here wondering whether it is a normal thing and whether the air everywhere is full of dust, or whether I'm being too lazy on the cleaning (particularly upstairs) and need to be better at it.

an electrostatic (ionising) air cleaner actually does work. Very good for athsmatics. It makes the fine dust particles clump together into lumps and fall to the floor. You may have notoiced how dust is attracted and clings to TVs by the static. When you first get one you will be surprised to find a "pool" of dust lying round the air cleaner, but this dies away after a few weeks IME, presumably because you have mopped up most of the resident dust. We have one in hall, living room and bedroom.

some are branded Flixonase, some are branded Lloyds Chemist. Lots of people seem to have bought them as gimmicks and then lost interest. I think they were £28 when they first came out, then they were half-price on offer at my local Lloyds, then halved again on clearance.
