Is it foolish to get carpet in the hallway right where we will walk into the house?

We are just about to exchange on our new-build house and we need to carpet through the house very soon. I hate laminate as have it in our current house and I think tiles might be a bit cold but would the carpet be ruined within about 5mins of moving in? Or do those mat things help?

I know I will be nagging everyone to remove their shoes as soon as I open the door but I do love nice carpet!

Yes, it will get trashed. You will have to a good size mat to keep your sanity.

orienteerer · 07/02/2012 20:58

Do not go down the carpet route.

EverybodysSnowyEyed · 07/02/2012 20:59

don't know your lay out but at the front door we have carpet that is essentially a doormat - it is twice the length of the door. Rest of the hall is wood but have seen the same with carpet

it's great! Cheap to replace if we really needed to, can leave buggy, muddy shoes, wet umbrellas there. also have a little stool so kids can get their shoes off and slippers on

yes that's what we have bran - all on one level

but we live in a city so mud is probably less of an issue!

pictish · 07/02/2012 21:04

We have carpet in the hall - it was already here when we moved in, but it's a good carpet so we're not in a rush to replace it.
I bought two large sisal mats for front and back door, and a really nice runner for along the straight bit. It's fine.

Hmm, I would definitely get one of those built in mats but the hallway is quite small anyway as the front door is the only entrance and the stairs are directly in front of you as you enter IYSWIM. I thought about a built-in mat to step onto and then another mat to the right. To remove shoes on.

I know it is going to stress me out!

We have carpet and put a cheap Ikea runner down. Ikea runner goes in washing m/c.

orienteerer · 07/02/2012 21:12

Whatever you decide I can recommend some Boot Trays.

Thirstpocket · 07/02/2012 21:13

Personally I would never choose carpet for a hallway when you have young kids and a DH who brings a trail of mud with him wherever he goes.

We rent, we have a carpeted hallway and I hate it. We do have one of those built in doormat things but it doesn't really help all that much tbh.

The combination of buggies, scooters, wellies, boots etc etc just makes it soooo scruffy (even though we take shoes off it still manages to get pretty grim).

I'd rather be cold than have carpet :)

EverybodysSnowyEyed · 07/02/2012 21:13

bran - snap! (did you used to live in my house!)

My sister has a wider hallway and stairs are closer (almost square) - hallway is probably 2.5 width of front door). built in mat goes halfway to stairs. works well as the colour of the mat vs the carpet go well together

ShagOBite · 07/02/2012 21:16

We got the carpet fitted about 5ft from the door - exposed floorboards for the first bit. Seems to work.

oreocrumbs · 07/02/2012 21:16

What about Karndean flooring (that posh padded lino stuff). I think carpet
will drive you mad, I'm not a fan of laminate either, and I have tiles and it is bloody cold! If I were replacing mine, I think I would go with Karndean (I'm going to put it in my batroom when I get round to it in 100 years time).

I once viewed a house that had white carpet in the hall, with just a normal square doormat to protect it! They had the white carpet all through the downstairs and up the stars too. There was not one single mark on it Shock. They had at least one DC as well. It scared me to be honest!!

reddaisy · 07/02/2012 21:54

The stairs are probably 1.5m from the door bran. There is a porch area but it is outdoor if that makes sense so I could have a couple of good mats in there as well for extra scraping but I don't want to have to be constantly nagging the DCs about the carpet, I already get like that on days when I have hoovered and mopped!

reddaisy · 07/02/2012 21:56

I haven't heard of Karndean flooring before Oreo, I don't like laminate either as it seems cheap. DP seems set on carpet but he will just shrug when it gets ruined and I will be the one stressing about it!

I suppose one option would be a dark carpet - deep brown or something, but that also depends on your decor. Real wood? The Karndean is quite nice, you can get it in any pattern, wood effect, stone, or lino type patterns. I saw it in a show house and I had to get down and touch it to tell check if it was real wood. Was very confused to find it was lino. It is very thick and kind of padded and it was ridged with the wood grain. Its not cheap but for a small area won't be too much. I think the other brands of it are Rhino and amtico.

thejaffacakesareonme · 08/02/2012 02:40

We have carpet in our hall. The previous owners had it laid and as it is good quality I'm not in a hurry to get it replaced. It is a deep red colour and hides the dirt very well until I have time to get the hoover out. We have light coloured walls so the overall feel is not too dark. As DH hates hard flooring I'll probably replace it with something similar in a few years.

PigletJohn · 08/02/2012 10:00

you might consider having polypropylene carpet in the hall as it is stain resistant and will withstand very brutal cleaning (including bleach). A twist with a mottled or heather texture.

Also a rug, though you will find it crawls about.

Definitely BIG mats inside and outside the door, and somewhere to sit while you take your shoes off.

Gavi · 08/02/2012 10:07

Just ask at your local carpet shop for a stain resistant carpet - most good ones are these days. And make sure they put a good underlay underneath, to prevent pile damage and to make it easier to clean and recover. (DH works in flooring industry so it's all I hear about - we have carpet in hall and it's fine).

PDog · 08/02/2012 10:12

The problem with new builds is that there is only a shallow lip between the door and floor. We had carpet at first but there wasn't enough clearance to have a mat and open the door. The bristles on the underside of the door also picked up all the dust and wiped over the carpet every time the door opened.

I wasn't keen on laminate either but that is what we have now. Much more practical and there is space for some mats for the pram, taking shoes off etc. You can get some nice ones that look more like real wood.

TheEpilator · 08/02/2012 10:22

yes Smile

Rhinopotamus · 08/02/2012 10:28

We're in a new build and we have karndean in the hallway. It looks like wood and is really easy to clean. Was more expensive than carpet or limo but worth it I think.

ChickensGoMeh · 08/02/2012 10:35

What about putting real wood down? We have a solid wood floor and it's fab.
