Can anyone recommend an appliance or smoke-free way of cooking bacon and sausages etc?

Dh and I have recently started a low carb diet, and things are going well, with 1.5 stone lost between us already. The only problem is cooking sausages and bacon and other such meats. It doesn't matter if I fry or use the oven grill, it makes the whole house stink of smoke for a day afterwards. I can't stand it! Does anyone have an appliance that cooks such things without the stink? Thanks. All recommendations greatly received!

you can try a clay thing, sometimes called a dutch oven, that you put in a hot oven. You might have heard of a chicken brick, it is an unglazed earthenware pot with a lid. The fat seems to soak into the clay and burn away, and the lid contains it.

sausages, bacon and other fatty meats can always be cooked in a very hot oven anyway, my Zanussi instruction book calls it "thermal grilling." It is said to work better in a fan oven. It may help to put them on a roasting grill with folded kitchen roll underneath to catch the fat and prevent it splashing.

Non-fatty things dry out when cooked that way.

If you fry or grill, fat and smoke particles spray about and settle in a film all around the cooker.

Presume you are using a cooker hood extractor as well?

p.s. if you buy German sausages, they contain less fat and no water, unlike English ones, so are cleaner to cook, and healthier.

Agree with Piglet They're quite nice baked - especially sausages with some onion & peppers if your carbs allow.
I do burgers etc in the oven as well (mainly because loads of the fat drains off them).

I do my bacon in the microwave, sausages in he oven - it keeps the smells as bay !

I always cook sausages in the oven, I can just put them in and ignore them til they're cooked which is less faff than having to turn them/avoid spitting oil etc.

Sausages in the oven, always as i burn them if i grill them and can't be arsed to turn them. Take about 20 mins, and cook excellently on a Pampered Chef ceramic baking tray, but also fine on a metal one too.

I also cook sausages in the ven, but cook them for longer on a medium heat, rather than on a high heat (gets the fat spitting and smoking).

Lean back bacon cooked in a frying pan or chargrill pan with a drizzle of oil shouldnt smoke.

Wow, thank you all ladies (PigletJohn, Iklboo, Sanesometimes, EquestrianStatue, Crisplecrisp and MerryHippo) for the fab suggestions! Do you know, I am a complete muppet. I never even thought about cooking sausages in the oven, rather than grilling them. Argh. That would be a very good, and inexpensive solution! I?m going to look into the Dutch oven idea too. I like the sound of that. And yes, Piglet, I am using an extractor too, though it doesn?t seem to make much difference. Thanks for the great tips. I am going to try your idea of putting it all in a Le Creuset lidded pot and cooking it that way. Unfortunately we haven?t got a fan oven. We have a LaCanche that we inherited from the last owners, but not for much longer as we?re getting the kitchen done up in a few months (eek). Also great idea about doing the bacon in the microwave. I?m going to try that out. Twenty minutes on a medium heat then!

Thanks again everyone, all the advice is much appreciated, and I will really enjoy my bacon and sausages sans stink thanks to you all.
