ive got a new small table coming, seats 4. Its not the best quality as we are hoping to move in a couple of years, just need something to fill a very small space, so planning to dress it with a black table cloth, and some nice place settings - and i cant find any that are nice.
Ive looked on M&S website, dunelm mills, john lewis, heals....

my living/dining room is neutral and red, so thought maybe something with red in it.

does anyone know where else i could look? i didnt want anything naff! but naff is mostly all i can find.

thanks!

what we do have is some cane/wicker/rattan (not sure exactly) round & oval mats, which DH likes & insists on dragging out occasionally

(I married down Wink)

I got nice bamboo ones from Costco

im also intending to get a new dinner service so worlds my oyster really....could easily change the table cloth colour.

if the table has a robust surface you will get by just with fabric place settings

(if you must Wink)

i think maybe slate or granite could be the way to go....with a dark red table cloth perhaps.

(i skipped a load of slate tiles....before i ever found out what slate was worth like an eejit. )

thanks again for the help with this...

ThatVikRinA22 · 22/01/2012 23:48

this is the cheapest of cheap oak tables from argos. my lovely big chunky mango table is just too big for this dining room as i bought if for my last (bigger) house

i know its not the law to have mats but i just thought if i dressed the table with a nice cloth, nice tasteful mats, napkins, it would disguise the fact that its a cheapo table....

Ok, the dog in a red outfit is quite frankly horrendous. I'd go for slate, or glass. Easy to keep clean. We have old but serviceable wicker ones for day to day use, then chargers for special occasions.

If you search under google images you might save time?

ThatVikRinA22 · 22/01/2012 23:58

didnt think of that....thanks ill try images. still looking but getting close to giving up for tonight at least.

I still don't think you need mats unless you have a really precious highly polished table (which you don't?)

so fabric settings would be fine for you

nooka · 23/01/2012 00:04

I have three sets (all from John Lewis) big round silver ones for Christmas, black granite ones for hot things, and then wooden ones for when I feel like dressing things up a bit but it's not Christmas. I like plain settings though.

ThatVikRinA22 · 23/01/2012 00:10

i like plain too nooka,

i want mats i dont have to wash all the time ponders, so im thinking granite or slate.

wonder if i would be better keeping it all one colour....black granite, black table cloth...mmmm. cant decide now.

think im just going to get plain white crockery. unless anyone has seen anything stunning anywhere - i love denby but with my lot it wouldnt last 2 minutes so no point in paying mega bucks.

I got some gorgeous White chins from Jamie at home - the coco range. Took about 2 years getting it a bit at a time but very happy with them.

I'm a big fan of vinyl / oilcloths for a)hiding ugly tables and b) being a breeze to keep clean, i'm about to order a new vinyl from wipe.co.uk they do some fab contemporary prints, I like this one

deviladvocate · 23/01/2012 13:35

Jeez or even china

Mmmmm, the granite ones are nice. They would go well with my blue and grey Denby. Just need to find £50 though.

I can't bear cloth mats or tablecloths, as they need washing all the time, and as our dining table is quite a formal-looking one (inherited from grandfather) it looks a little "nude" without placemats.
