3 year old Bosch dishwasher needs new motor. Replace or shell out for Miele?

Just had the engineer around and it's definitely the motor that needs replacing Sad Sad. Out of warranty. According to him, Bosch are the best, but it only 3 years old so am reluctant to buy Bosch again.

It's going to cost about £150 - £200 to fix...

Do I fix it, or bite the bullet and get a Miele. Engineer said he's never had to fix a Miele in his 25 years....

If you can afford it I would be tempted to splash out on the Miele.

If Bosch are the best I would be a bit Hmm about your motor going after only 3 years.

I wanted to get a Miele washer/dryer, but we have economised and got a Bosch one!

you might also look at Siemens.

Bosch and Siemens jointly own the company that designs and builds the domestic appliances, they are both very reliable and similar but the Siemens tend to be a bit quieter and slightly upmarket.

John Lewis often have a "special offer" 5 year warranty on selected Siemens appliances, and I see they have it on some of the dishwashers at the moment. I dare say it is all built into the price though.

Aren't the Miele well over £500? I would replace if I were you, but if your trust in Bosch is gone and you can afford it, it's up to you.

I think you've been unlucky that the motor's gone after just 3 years; my Bosch is still working as well as the day I bought it, in April 2006. Bet I've massively tempted fate now! Grin

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 21/01/2012 19:11

Miele. It'll last you until the late 2020s.

BackforGood · 21/01/2012 19:17

I'd get on to the shop you bought it from tbh. You buy white goods expecting to last at least twice that length of time - it should be 'fit for purpose' under the Sale of Goods Act - I wouldn't be happy with that.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 22/01/2012 10:06

Thanks for advice.

The really irritating part was when I called up Bosch customer services and they said I should have bought an extended warranty!!! Ha ha, so even they don't believe their machines should last more than 2 years! Hmm

one thing worth knowing

when I had a fault on the Bosch washer, I called their service line, and they offered me a fixed-price repair, or a fixed price repair-plus-one-year-service contract for not much more.

If you have an expensive fault, it can work out good value. I got my money's worth.

I have only once needed a repair on a Bosch appliance.

mumdebump · 23/01/2012 14:14

Have been seriously unimpressed with Bosch quality. Our dishwasher has failed after 4 years. Seems like they build them to be disposable nowadays. Annoyingly we bought top of the range Bosch and could have bought a basic Miele for much the same money. Miele have a 10-year warranty offer on selected appliances at the moment so I would be tempted to look at those.

mumdebump · 23/01/2012 14:16

PigletJohn, did the fixed price repair include parts. I thought it was fixed price for call out and labour charge?

mazzi2fly · 23/01/2012 14:18

Our Miele Dishwasher is now 17 years old. Never had a moments bother with it.

PigletJohn · 23/01/2012 16:54

mumdebump

Yes it did, it was quite a good deal in the end (they fitted a new pump first, then, possibly because it had been shaken about turning the machine over, a new PCB)

I don't know if I can find how much it cost, but I was confident at the time that it was less than PAYG would have been. It was probably in 2008.

YNK · 23/01/2012 17:08

I have a cheap Diplomat (old MFI) which is going strong since 2002.

I had a problem last year and the engineer charged £20 to come out and tell me the internal float had 'gone' and the machine needed replaced as you can't get the parts these days.

I googled diplomat dishwasher and among the ads for cheap and available parts, there was a site giving a description of the fault and instructions for resetting the machine. I fixed it myself in 3 minutes!!!

Now don't get me wrong, there are things I would not scrimp over, but a dishwasher is a fairly simple machine so I don't think it's worth going top dollar for one.

PigletJohn · 23/01/2012 17:09

it was £129, parts, labour and one year's cover, 17 September 2008. I didn't renew it at the end of the year and the machine has not gone wrong again.

Sesquipedality · 23/01/2012 18:31

DON'T buy Miele I have great Bosch, hate miele. My bosch was basic 4 years ago and was £200 - the same as your motor.

PS Don't did I say don't buy a Miele

RatDesPaquerettes · 23/01/2012 18:38

Maybe email the Bosch customer service explaining how disappointed you are that after only 3 years of use, your dishwasher is now out of action. Ask them whether they can recommend a way forward that will not cost the earth.

There is always Twitter to highlight the problem in a more public way... Feels a bit like blackmail but 3 years is a very short time for appliances made by Bosch.

Sesquipedality · 23/01/2012 18:48

Ooh ooh - Do look at this article It is from the Mail I admit but it's clearly a press release from Which? Talks about your rights on faulty goods up to 6 years after purchase ...

www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/news/article-2060657/How-high-street-stores-deny-legal-rights-returns-Damning-report-reveals-staff-clueless-faulty-goods-law.html#ixzz1da8LNJCq

IMO an actual letter will be even better as it will be logged and passed along, rather than going directly to the inbox of the fobbing-off department.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 23/01/2012 19:52

wow! Thanks sesquipedality. Called Bosch again and spoke to a very nice helpful person this time and said that I needed to go through the retailer, but that they recently had training in Sales of Goods Act.

A motor needing replacing in 3 years is not reasonable quality is it?

Thanks so much for advice people! May not have to choose between vacation and dishwasher! Grin

RubberDuck · 23/01/2012 19:55

My LG washer dryer comes with a free 10 year guarantee on the motor! I'm shocked that your Bosch (which I'd consider to be a pricier brand) has burned out after 3 years!

RubberDuck · 23/01/2012 19:56

Doh, just reread and seen that it's a dishwasher not a washing machine - but that's even more shocking, imo. I expect family heavy usage to take its toll on a washing machine, far less so on a dishwasher.

oooggs · 23/01/2012 20:26

My diplomat dishwasher died today Sad must be at least 10 years old. Just ordered a new one, it isn't a Bosch or miele, just hope it is ok!

oooggs · 23/01/2012 20:26

The part to fix it was £167 so not worth it!

Cristiane · 24/01/2012 09:10

I bought the basic, entry level Miele dishwasher for £520 and it is BRILLIANT
