Black mould on wallpaper

Whenisitmysleepytime · 19/01/2012 12:22

We have black mould on the wall paper in our room.
In pretty sure it's due to lack of ventilation/ lightso I'm doing things about that.

But what to do about the wallpaper?
Can the mould be removed?
How?
Should I just redecorate - which I'd love to do but with 2 small dc and no spare room to escape to it'll take ages

Any thoughts? :)

Hmm. Sorry but you need to strip the wallpaper, clean the wall and plaster it with anti fungal stuff or it's just going to keep coming through.

We had a house with black mould on the wall paper. There was damp in the wall itself due to a leaking roof. Is there any chance that is the problem?

I suspected we'd need mould killer stuff.
I'm ok with decorating a I'd like the textured wallpaper gone and some nice clean paintwork instead. It's just the length of time it'll take as dc are 2.9 and 9mo so still need lots of attention.

I'm pretty sure the roof is fine as the tiles all look good iyswim. No guttering near by etc etc.

You need to find out where it's coming from. Is the air vent blocked?

Whenisitmysleepytime · 19/01/2012 14:01

The only vent is in the ceiling - into the loft so will get dh to check that.

We are v guilty of not opening windows or curtains! Blush [slattern]

You're like me then. Wink

you have got to resolve the damp before you try to deal with the mould. Otherwise it will just come back.

The main source of damp in UK houses is draping wet clothes around the house and over radiators.

Ventilation will help reduce ordinary humidity, but wet washing causes so much damp that it will overwhelm ordinary ventilation.

Once you have cured the damp, you need to strip off the old wallpaper. You can wash down the walls with dilute bleach or one of the mould killers, but as long as you have cured the damp it will not come back.

If you have not cured the damp, the mould will come back even if you use a mould killer.

BTW I hope the vent does not just go into the loft, or it will cause condensation, damp and rot up there. The vent needs to be ducted to the outside.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 19/01/2012 16:30

There's no wet washing in our room and only one damp towel hung over edge of laundry basket by door.

I have no idea where vent goes - or what it does. It's just a vent looking thing in the ceiling.

Looks like the paper is coming off.

Know what I'm doin g with killing mould on painted surfaces as I did it in the bathroom ceiling 3+ years ago and it's not come back. :)

We had this in our bedroom. Stripping the paper, using a mould killer and then painting the walls initially got rid of the mould. To ensure it doesnt come back we now leave the window open for at least part of the day, light the fire in there regularly and also we now have a dehumidifier.

Do your windows have lots of condensation on them in the morning? If so you need to heat and ventilate the room more, also a dehumidifier will help although they are expensive and not really essential if you can do the heat/ventilation thing. I find when my dh is at home and sleeps in our room we have loads more condensation on the windows. Obviously breathes alot of hot wet air Grin

Whenisitmysleepytime · 19/01/2012 17:48

Yes we have lots of condensation. Dh gets hot easily and I'm cold so the radiators are on low. The heating is on a thermostat so it never gets too cold iyswim.
Dh probably doesn't help with his big wet snores! Hmm

I have resolved to open the window daily tho and opening curtains too.
Hopefully that'll help.
