not sure if this is the right place to ask - but, guest beds.

We are in desperate need of a single guest bed that will not only fold up nicely, but will also provide some level of comfort for guests. Can't afford much more than £150 though...

I have no idea where to look! When I was younger, I had a fold out camp bed/z bed type thing, but it squeaked with every breath, and I was a child, so it didn't matter how flimsy the mattress was. This one will be used for a heavy man (in his 60s) at some point, and also possibly for a woman in her 50s, so needs to have a mattress that actually provides some level of support. It also needs to be high enough up for them to sit on it, so not just a roll out mattress.

we did have a futon for a while, but it was NOT comfortable (IKEA one), and we have a sofa bed (also IKEA) which is not only uncomfortable, but also in the lounge - we need one that will go in DH's office, so must be a single.

Any ideas?

thanks in advance!!

We've just ordered a double bed-height Aerobed. Supposed to be very good, inflates quickly and no getting down on the floor required. Out for delivery today so unable to give review just yet!

Angelswings · 09/01/2012 09:35

Double height blow up beds are good but not sure about the age and weight you describe
John Lewis do the traditional fold out beds but again think they may be too low
We have amazing sofa bed from Laura Ashley my dad aged 76 sleeps on

thanks, will look into them. Problem with inflatable beds is that they need re-inflating daily, IME. Also, FIL (he of the age and weight!) will be staying for 10 days, so I want him to be comfy! (he's always had our bed when he's stayed in the past, but I will be 40+ weeks pg/have a newborn when he's here, so will NOT be giving up my bed for anyone!!)

The new inflatable beds are much better, even have built in pump and deflator. Kids jumping on it at NewYear didn't kill it
Could he stay at a B&B as you are 40 weeks and need space?

Kveta · 09/01/2012 11:11

ooh, will def have to investigate then - what brand did you end up with? DS would love to have a go at deflating an airbed...

we want him staying with us to look after DS in the event of me actually having baby around my due date (DS was 6 days over, but only due to induction - would happily have hung in there for longer, I'm sure!!). my mum will be coming later on for a few days, grudgingly, but plans to stay in a local B+B, however, I'd like to have a bed available for her as an option anyway :)

Op so glad you started this thread as i've been delaying starting one, preisely because i am fed up with the inlatable beds. I gone through two, and after a while they develop a tiny hole somewhere and guest finds themselve lying on hard floor at some point in the night, ive decided to get a proper guest bed this time as MIL will be comming.

Im hoping someone can point me to a good guest bed much like OP described.

Kveta · 09/01/2012 11:46

bulletpoint - I did already find one that looks great, but is fricking pricy - here

also tempted by this but I'm not sure how comfy it would be.

so will look into the airbeds and see if they suit our needs, for slightly less cash!

Thank you kveta, i"ll look at these.

Seona1973 · 09/01/2012 12:29

Argos ell the Aerobed raised single inflatable beds: bog standard or deluxe

ChitChatInChaos · 09/01/2012 13:18

A decent sofabed costs more than a proper single bed. So if you want something compact it will cost more.

Have you considered a Swing Away Bed? You lift it up in one piece so there are no flimsy joints. You can get a 'cupboard' which closes around it so you don't see it during the day, but very easy to simply pull it down when you need. Still pricey but far more compact than other options.

CrotchFlakes · 09/01/2012 13:36

I'm not sure of the advantage in a floor thing like the sit and sleep ones over a good blow up bed - if you are having to get on the floor, then at least a blow up bed will fold away to nothing when not in use.

Is there room for a day bed?
Would it be cheaper to put him in a B&B?

bluerodeo · 09/01/2012 13:41

we also have family staying for extended periods of time - got around this by getting a small double bed for my daughter's room - guests stay in her room and she cuddles into our bed (appreciate it's not appropriate for you at the moment!) or with her other siblings, on their floor using camping mats, or in bed with them

homeaway · 09/01/2012 14:59

I would not get an air bed for somebody older to sleep on,they are far too low for them to get up from, they are also very bouncy. I would put grandad in a single bed in one of the kids rooms and double the kids up if that is an option. The kids would love to sleep on a mattress or airbed. Found this at JL would be preferable to an airbed www.johnlewis.com/230213282/Product.aspx or this www.johnlewis.com/230306345/Product.aspx
