Even with a big house, the washing for the 5 of us sits our room fr most days of the week. Would love to make some space but don't want to use a tumble dryer

Do you have a Ceiling clothes airier? If where is it? What do you think about one over a very wide high stair well?

Ours is in the utility room, v handy.
Friend had one in her stairwell (over the landing part iyswim, so it wasn't seen from bottom of the stairs), worked well.

Where to put the Sheila Maid is a major problem in the Priceless house!

We previously had it in the bathroom of a high ceilinged Victorian house. That was bloody perfect. Then we had it kind of in a side bit of the kitchen in a barn conversion. Not as good but still fab. Now we have finally moved to a 4 bedroomed house, and do you think we can find anywhere for it? I am actually considering a house extension in order to create somewhere for the Sheila Maid.Blush

But... to answer your question. Over the stairs would be good if you have a lot of space, and don't mind the view of the washing in the stairwell. Consider carefully what length you get and measure that across the ceiling. Then think about big duvets hanging down 5 ft from it. Would that impede your travel up the stairs?

Also, I'm assuming you have good ceiling beams in the right position to attach the pulley brackets to? It needs to be fixed very strongly as with a full load of wet washing on it is carrying quite a weight.

They are brilliant though! You won't believe how well the washing dries up there by the ceiling.

Thank you, great things to think about. Will ask DIY friend to check if we can hang it there

if it is a downstairs room with a room above, the joists will be plenty strong enogh. If you look carefully you may see dust shading on the ceiling along the line of the joist, or possibly marks where the nail heads are. If not, you can detect the joists from above, or from below using a simple home-made tool.
