John Lewis mattresses

Need a new mattress and was looking at John Lewis' own range. Someone told me they'd had what used to be called the 'Renoir' and found it very good, but they've changed their range since she bought it. Does anyone know what the current equivalent is? What experiences do mners have of John Lewis mattresses?

Don't.

Just don't!

We bought their high end mattress - firm, orthapedic, no need to flip etc.

Lasted 5 years before it became so uncomfy we binned it.

Went to our local bedmakers instead - much cheaper and nicer!

Thanks for telling me about your experience, Flying. I sometimes wonder if John Lewis are trading on a reputation they acquired years ago but don't now deserve.

Actually, I was walking past our local bedding 'emporium' yesterday and wondered if it was worth trying them. It looks a mess, mattresses piled up everywhere, and ours is a poor Northern town so the emphasis will be on the cheap, but I might have a root round. I did after all find our first bed at a grotty warehouse place in Gateshead and it was a Vi-spring - dead cheap because it was ex-display.

Oh our local one is not one of the pile 'em high places, rather it's a local charity that trains blind and disabled people to a trade - mattress making. We have a few of the pile places and my BF swears by he mattress she got there - but tends to be a "when it's gone, it's gone!" place so a bit hit or miss.

That charity sounds an excellent concept. Haven't heard of anything similar round here - if I did I'd definitely be interested.

Yes, I think with our local shop it would be a question of going in every week until I struck lucky (if ever). Last time I went in I was accosted by the bloke running it. Thought he was going to give me a hard sell, but in fact he asked me what was my favourite fish, and how did I cook it! Had involved conversation about the merits of Sea Bass before I made my escape without beds ever being mentioned. Some revolutionary new sales technique, perhaps.

For anyone who's thinking of a JLP memory foam mattress, I was warned off them by an honest assistant, who said they were in no way comparable to Tempur which she'd had to shell out on due to her spinal problems. Much hotter for a start.
