Just moved to a new house and I want to [try] and keep things tidy and organised. One thing I find is that the work tops are full of stuff! I want to try and keep them relatively clear (just with kettle, toaster, knife block, blender and then just with some funky storage) I have limited cupboard space to hide things in - sugar, tea, coffee are in a cupboard but bread always seems to stay on the worktop and I hate it!! Any ideas? I have seen some bread bins but am not liking them (stainless steel rolltop ones) maybe something a bit retro and ceramic? Kitchen is neutral (not our choice!) so maybe something with colour?

Just marking my place since I was just thinking I could do with a bread bin!

I quite like this one but haven't had a proper look yet. I'd prefer something vertical I think to take up less space.

You can get big bread tins which say BREAD on the front. Our current bread thing is ceramic. I buy everything second hand. Can you put up shelves just to keep them upwards? I prefer shelves to cupboards as you can't leave the shelf door open and walk into it. Hooks are pretty good too, and you can hang them from the bottom of said shelves. You could take a look on ebay, especially at this time of year!

I have a barbantia bread bin.

I keep the bread on top of it, and everything else inside Confused. You will find biscuits, crackers, dried fruit, clothes pegs, random toys and possibly several new life forms in there!

I'm going to get rid of it though as its a bugger to keep clean, its to big to go in the dishwasher or sink so it gets wiped, but its constantly dusty and has sticky finger prints on etc.

I'm thinking of one like minipie's link.

I also have a bread bag from lakeland, its a cotton drawstring bag with some sort of plastic lining, and you can hang that up on a hook in a cupboard. I don't use it though, in fact I have no idea how I came by it Grin

I keep bread in the freezer. I buy brands that still separate into slices when frozen rather than the type that break into lots of little pieces when you try to extract a slice.

I keep mine in the microwave... It sits on the work top empty most of the time so it may as well act as my bread bin.

I've got a nice wooden breadbin (I think from Sainsbos) - its roughly a cube with a top that's more or less flat so if I run out of counter space I can put something on top of it. You probably don't want wood, but I recommend the shape!

Banana - you've got to tell us which brands of bread don't clump when frozen. I'd like to keep an emergency loaf but evidently I've never bought the right sort.

I have one that looks like this but in stainless steel, doesn't take up so much room.

BananaPie · 06/01/2012 09:38

Sainsbury's taste the difference and burgen wholemeal don't clump when frozen. Will try warburtons next time I can't get hold of either of these!

Fit2Burst · 06/01/2012 11:06

I'm liking the dual use of the nigella one (using lid as a board or putting stuff on top cos it's a flat lid) but I'm still not conv
