Where do you keep all your stuff that would be clutter?

At the moment we have files for our bills and bank statements and stuff. We keep these in the black hole cupboard under the stairs. But the faff involved in getting everything out, locating the files, filing them and putting them away means that we just pile them up next to the sofa.

Where do you put DVDs and games? We have a pile of DVDs and Wii games next to the telly table. I stack them all up vaguely neatly and 5 mins later DS will throw them on the floor.

Books, where do you put those? Ours are piled up next to the sofa. Mostly cookery books and the like (there's no room in the kitchen for these).

We have one bookcase, but it's currently my Open University bookcase and full to bursting (yes, with clutter)

I also have an IKEA sack thing of crap waiting to be shredded. Thinking of setting fire to it as shredding it is going to take me all 2012.

Bills etc - filing cabinet in study
DVDs and games - bookcase by tv
Books - another bookcase in living room and one in bedroom
Definitely burn the shredding stuff - it will be more fun than spending hours at the shredder!

I have a half height, deep shelf bookcase in living room with paperwork file, box file, folders and books on it.
I have some shelving in my room on which I store my cds, books, and dvds.
DS has a small bookcase in his room piled and overflowing with books.

I have a couple of wicker basket type things in living room which fit perfectly under side tables, one contains toys, one contains remotes and wii games and controllers.

TimeWasting · 01/01/2012 17:00

Sounds like you need more bookcases.
Make sure you're only saving the paperwork you really need too.

BrianButterfield · 01/01/2012 17:03

Deep baskets are good, too, for things like Wii stuff.

40notTrendy · 01/01/2012 17:05

A bookcase in practically every room!! And I'm still overflowing with crap clutter Grin

Bignorkz · 01/01/2012 17:09

Go paperless for the bills/statements, you can do this with most banks etc online! Saves a tree and you doing any filing!

BertieBotts · 01/01/2012 17:16

Shelves for books and DVDs.

Drawer for filing stuff, although I wish it was more organised, DP keeps things for years.

oksonowwhat · 01/01/2012 21:35

Bookcase for books including cookery books, in sitting room. I need to sort out more storage for these this year as i also have a few piles of books in my room i never know where to put!!

DVDs are in a storage unit in my teenage daughters room, they are mainly heres or communal so she doesn't mind them in there.

Bills and paperwork.....well the idea is that it gets filed away in box files in the bottom of my wardrobe but i tend to pile it on top of the freezer until it looks such a state then go through it and file it away!!

I think the idea is to always try to have places to put things! Easier said than done i knowSmile Oh and get rid of as much stuff as you can!

StopRainingPlease · 01/01/2012 21:49

Shelves, get more shelves! Hunt around for overlooked spots (hallways, alcoves etc) where you could fit some shelves in, get measuring and off you go.

As for bills, paperwork etc, I and DH both have in-trays (kept on shelves...) where we put stuff like that till we get round to filing them properly.

oreocrumbs · 01/01/2012 22:18

This is not an instant solution (unless you're in the market for new furniture).

When the time comes to buy new beds/sofa etc I am going to buy things that have build in storage, beds that you lift up and the whole of the divan space is storage, sofas with a foot stool that you lift up and have storage in etc.

I think the big thing is being ruthless and organised though! Apparently you can't buy that in Ikea Grin

shodatin · 01/01/2012 22:44

Would wholeheartedly agree with lots of bookcases but also add a wardrobe or two wherever it looks good, then add cardboard fruit trays (or see-through containers).

ChristmasIsAcumenin · 02/01/2012 07:16

I scan everything into Evernote and shred the paper. The amount of things you actually need to keep is pretty small: premium bonds, birth certificates, etc. I copy all my dvds and software ISOs to our intranet and put them in the loft. I got a kindle and gave away all my books that are not rare or art. This takes a weekend to set up but then is pretty easy to maintain.

My house is absolutely tiny, so I had to do something!

Two big bookcases in dining end of lounge diner. But the clutter is organised within them so magazines are in file box type things. Family tree stuff in filing boxes. We have a filing cabinet in the understairs cupboard. All memory stuff is in a cardboard lidded box, one for each person.
Wardrobes are ikea with storage solutions like deep boxes for shoes/scarves etc. Crucially playroom has trofast storage and bookcases.

Changebagsandgladrags · 02/01/2012 12:31

Right, well we can't fit anymore bookcases in, there's no more floor space. But we could put up shelves above other things.

We do have the Trofast thing in the play/dining room. When we're a bit flusher with cash we could bookcases in there.

I have a drawer unit on wheels in the cupboard under the stairs but the meters are in there. So when the bastard guy comes round everything has to be hauled out again.

We had no floor space at house before last and about 600 cds so we had 3 cd shelves on each of the two sofa walls. High ceilings so it wasn't oppressive.

Very slim cd shelves like Ikea Benno could fit in where there's only a little space.

bigkidsdidit · 02/01/2012 14:34

I have 4 Billy bookcases in sitting room and the bottom shelf of each has files / board games / boxes with spare birthdya cards etc. Also a memory box for storing stuff that seems important and a pen box etc - these are all nice looking boxes so clutter magically disappears :)

You could put shelves for nice boxes up and copy my magic clutter disappearing system!

TeaOneSugar · 02/01/2012 15:06

Wii Games on a rack tucked into the corner by the TV, you can't really see the stand just the games, I still have to keep nagging DD to put the games back in it but at least they have somewhere to go.

We also have a basket for Wii paraphernalia, controllers, mats etc, so a good place to throw general clutter when MIL knocks on the door unexpectedly, if the floor is clear it all looks tidier.

Books are on the bookcase in the lounge - mainly my cookbooks, others are on a bookcase in the spare room or at the side of the bed if I'm reading them.

A tidy organised home is still very much a work in progress here.

countessbabycham · 02/01/2012 16:48

1 x bookcase in kids bedroom
1 x bookcase in living room
2 x slimline DVD racks
1 x filing cabinet in "office area"

Small place so clutter has to fit the storage, not vice versa.

I am presently mid - enormous - clutter - cull as the walls are starting to move in and things are feeling oppressive.I am particularly suffering with paperwork clutter as my filing cabinet is full.

RainboweBrite · 03/01/2012 11:44

Bills/paperwork- initially in a tray in a cupboard in our office/spare room. Eventually sorted into various files in the same cupboard.
DVDs/CDs/ tapes/videos- in our sideboard in the living room.
Books- 2 bookcases in the living room (trying to get this down to 1, eventually); 1 bookcase in DS's room; 1 small bookcase (filled with DH's beloved, but tatty sci-fi and fantasy paperbacks from his teens!) in office/spare room.
Magazines/catalogues- magazine rack in the living room.

lljkk · 03/01/2012 12:16

bills and bank statements and stuff: File cabinet friend gave me, plus box files on shelves in our "study/office/rail train track/spare bedroom"

DVDs and games: shelves that DH made near the computer & TV

Books, ...Mostly cookery books: can you not dedicate a bookshelf space elsewhere, buy another bookcase, something cheap from B+Q or Argos? Else you could put in cardboard boxes under your bed, if space really at a premium?

Do just bonfire the IKEA sack of shredding.
