Mattress topper vs saving for a new mattress

I've decided I don't find my mattress comfortable enough, it's just a bit too soft, I like it quite firm. The mattress is only a few years old so doesn't need replacing per se. Money is at a premium so I wondered is it worth investing say £100 in a good mattress topper or saving for longer and spending more on a new firm mattress?

Also will my fitted sheets still fit the bed with a mattress topper on aswell?

TIA!

I bought a mattress topper a while back & it's wonderful - my bed & mattress are from IKEA due to cash flow problems when I needed to buy it so I was a little restricted as to what I could buy, but it's lovely & is like having a new mattress.

Sometimes it starts to slide off the mattress, which pulls the fitted sheet a bit. Occasionally the sheet comes off & just fits around the topper instead. I always use a mattress protector to make sure there's a bit more leverage holding it in place. Considered getting those clip strap things that go across the corners to see if that helps. But in the grand scheme of things it's not too annoying.

does the mattress sit on a sprung base, or is it a hard top with just padding?

Depends on how long it'll take you to save up for a new mattress.

I'm saving for our ds' beds and was shocked at the price.
They are going without toppers, but that's because they haven't complained yet!
If i had to sleep in an uncomfortable bed I'd definately get one in the meantime and also save as much as poss for as long as poss to get the best mattress I could afford.

Not sure Piglet will have to check and get back to you.
