Have just managed to ruin a piece of furniture in my living room and don't know what I can do to fix it.

It's a bookshelf made from that flat pack stuff with a wooden finish as opposed to real wood, but at the same time wasn't that cheap either, and I only bought it last month and can't afford to replace it either.

We attached the christmas card holder to the side of it and have just removed it and where the selotape was attached to the wood it's ripped the wooden finish off with it.

It looks awful now and is really noticable, I can't believe a simple piece of selotape can do so much damage.

The bookshelf is in my front room and is the first thing you see when you walk in, there is no where else to move it to hide the damage either as it's so large (and fixed to the wall) so need to do something.

Am I going to have to replace it or is their any way this can be saved?

Could bloody kill myself for not thinking that selotape would do this.

Can't stick it back on no, have tried :(
It's all in pieces stuck to the selotape.

Plant won't do it either as it's on the side halfway down so it would have to be one huge dangling plant to cover it.

Was wondering if those wood pens you can buy will work, I know they are designed for real wood as opposed to the laminated stuff but it might as least blend it in a little.

a picture your dc have drawn stuck over it? Or what about that wall art stuff thats like sticky back plastic?

You could try laminate flooring filler. Its a coloured glue you get to fill in dents in flooring. It won't cover it completely but may make it less obvious. We used it to cover a dent in the floor

Wood pens do work, as do artists'/calligraphers' pens, if you can get same colour. There is also a two-part system, made by Dulux I think, which is meant for renovating wood (different colours) but works equally well on fake woods too. It'll cover up well if you can just get the right colour, if not, I suggest a fake butterfly!

Can you take the thing apart and reassemble it so the damaged piece of wood is in another place, or turned around so the damaged part faces the back?

RockChick1984 · 30/12/2011 23:44

Depending on where it's from, you may be able to buy a replacement piece of the fake wood stuff - we have a billy bookcase which my numpty dh put the fixed shelf in back to front so looked awful as it basically looked like it was made out of cork!! Think ours was off eBay but could you call the head office of the company you got it from and see if they can provide something similar?

Thanks everyone.

It is from Argos, going to call them in the morning and see if I can get a replacement piece.

If not than plan B is the wood pens / laminate filler. Just hope I can get the right colour as it is officially pine but is very light for pine IMO.

Plan C is sticking something over the damage but that's going to look just as bad really because of where the damage is and where the bookcase is.

Fingers crossed I get somewhere with Argos in the morning.

I think Argos are obligated to send you a new shelf quite frankly. Sellotape ought not to damage a bit of laminated veneer unless it is piss poor quality.

startail · 31/12/2011 00:47

You can buy laminate board in all sorts of colours.
If it's a shelf edge you can buy rolls of laminate tape from home base etc.
You use them to cover cut edges when you make your own furniture.
So if Argos are a pain you may be able to replace the damaged bit.
Ikea sell extra Billy book case shelves in lots of colours too.
If you are 8 ft tall you could see my burnt shelf. Which is now forming the very top of my Ikea shelving unit under a pile of books and a photo of DD.
I thought the gap above the candle was big enough, it wasn't.
Taking it apart and rearranging it was a pain, but it's part of a long run of shelves, draws and cupboards that ikea haven't made for about 10 years.
Good luck!
