Do you only put white things in your 'white wash'??

I have never quite understood this! I will do washes of DS's school shirts which are white, but can I then put vests/knickers belonging to the girls in which are white, but with coloured flowers/lace on?? What about white pj bottoms with flowers on!? If you do just white things-do you then do your nearly white (ie white background with patterns on or pink/cream things) in with your coloured bits-ie jeans/dark t-shirts? DS's shirts now aren't particularly white and I don't know if that's because they are getting old/worn or if my washing style is crap!!

Please help!

Yes I often chuck fairly light coloured stuff in my white wash as otherwise there wouldn;t be enough for a full wash.

I do find that school shirts do go a bit grey after a while if thye are not pure cotton

maydaychild · 29/12/2011 21:51

White only
Knickers with a small pink bow yes
Knickers with flower print all over no
White pj with green collar and cuffs? No.

Sorry !

mousysantamouse · 29/12/2011 21:52

I don't have anything pure white.
have
one basket for light hot wash like towels, kitchen cloths
one basket for all light clothes
one for dark clothes

woolens are sorted by colour but of course go in a wool wash.

GrimmaTheNome · 29/12/2011 21:53

I do tend to stick fairly scrupulously to white only after an unfortunate red sock in with DHs white work shirts incident many years ago. I do coloureds at 30 with colour tablet (fades them less) and whites with normal bio tab at 40.

A bit of a pale pattern may be allowed once in a while. I find that a weeks worth of DDs school shirts plus white undies/sports socks and the odd white T or top of mine is enough of a load.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 29/12/2011 21:54

It depends on the fabric - but the knickers & PJ bottoms will be fine. You can get whitener sachets which are great, I don't use them every wash as they're slightly bleaching and expensive, but throw one in every now & then. Often the water will make things a bit grey in the UK, but if you use calgon type things it helps (and the whitener things occasionally).

mamalovesmojitos · 29/12/2011 21:55

I do the same as maydaychild

AnnoyingOrange · 29/12/2011 21:55

I stick to whites (mainly school shirts and white t shirts)

mamalovesmojitos · 29/12/2011 21:56

Oh, and I fling in a scoop of vanish oxi White powder for good luck Smile

LordOfTheFlies · 29/12/2011 21:57

Oh yes

I have white
I have light coloured
I have dark coloured
I have black

I also have my white work tunics that have black trim, so these go on a 60C wash with that Vanish Hygiene. (I'm probably an advertisers' dream)

Halo Sports Wash for DS sports gear.

I do have alot of whites though- DD,DS and DH white shirts/blouses and white handtowels.

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/12/2011 00:17

Put a colour catcher in the wash.

dizzyday07 · 30/12/2011 01:23

Good golly no! I haven't enough pure white things to make that worthwhile. Everything that's not "dark" goes in together. And if I'm honet I've never known my "whites" to go grey - maybe I've just been lucky Grin

QuinionsRainbow · 30/12/2011 12:35

Whites plus things that are mostly white, i.e. with small amounts of colour trim, go in together.
Dark things go together.
Reds/purples go together, and NEVER with whites!
New/newish blues, greens, yellows (mostly DCs T-shirts) generally stock-piled until there are enough of any one colour to filll the machine, and again NEVER with whites.
Use Persil Colour Care powder when available, but it's getting rare and I suspect we're going to have to learn how to use tablets/sachets etc. before much longer.
Underwear washed at 40 or 60, towels weekly at 90+Calgon tablet to keep the machine healthy.
Most other things at 30.
You didn't really want to know all that did you.

peachybums · 30/12/2011 19:25

I usually do DD1s white school shirts, white towels, white socks, my white undies and bras, DS white PE top together on a white wash, sometimes il chuck DD1s white knickers with pink bows on or DD2s white vests with yellow trim on in too cos im a rebel ;)

Then i do a dark wash, Black jeans, underwear, DSs navy school jumpers, DPs black socks, my jeans, leggings, DSs school trousers, DD1s school skirts etc etc

I also do a 'red' wash which is DD1s school cardigans, red tights, DD2s red dress, DD2s leggings, DSs red rugby shirt, DPs jack and jones hoody etc etc

I do a colour wash which is most of the two girls stuff as its all pink lol, my coloured tops and skirts, any coloured underwear, DSs tshirts

I also do a lights wash that are not white but still light, so like pastle colours mainly my pjs and the girls clothes. Some of DPs tshirts.

Never put anything dark in with whites and never put colours in with lights and ive been ok so far. Only time it went wrong was when i was in hospital and DP put his red hoody in with DD2s light blue top and it turned purple, which he got really told off for lol

WowOoo · 30/12/2011 19:29

Yes, especially if it is a hot wash. We have loads of white - sheets, vests, undies, tea towels etc.

I wouldn't do a hot wash with whites and colours mixed.

Have done a hot wash and accidentally put yellow dusters in before. We still have some pale yellow vests knocking around!

ginmakesitallok · 30/12/2011 19:34

I just shove it all in together - unless it's new dark coloured stuff and then I'll do a dark wash. We don't have much white stuff, and what white stuff we do have is still white. Life is to short for 10 washes!!!

shodatin · 30/12/2011 22:51

Mine are either whites+pastels or assorted darks - simples.

FestiveFriedaWassailsAgain · 30/12/2011 22:55

Lights and whites together here eg school polos plus cream towels

Very dark stuff and new coloured stuff together

Then assorted all colours/been washed a lot chuck it on at 40.

isthisreallyme · 30/12/2011 23:02

my white wash is all white or things that are 80% white with colour catcher.

I wash all whites (unless delicates) at 60 or 90 degrees. they never grey. even when years old Smile

oldsilverfathertime · 30/12/2011 23:09

White wash: whites and very lights/pastels and very little pale trim/pattern. Tend to put in Sainsbury's whitener powder (like Oxi but cheaper)

Colours: colours except anything with red, dark pastels, whites with darker trim/dark pattern.

Darks: darks/strong colours, anythng with red on it.

I sometimes dither between darks and colours and tend to go with whichever basket is the fullest and is going to be done next. All at 40 degree's except I will do a boil wash every six weeks/ couple of months with all the white/cream towels/flannels/tea towels and clothes that can take it - seems to take any greyness out that may be creeping in.

Haven't had any problems since going with a 3 basket method Xmas Smile

Changebagsandgladrags · 02/01/2012 22:13

I have a white wash which is mostly white with the odd thing with a trim on. They go on at 40C or 60C with non-bio powder.

I have a lights wash (pinks greys & light blues) this also goes on 40C with non-bio

Then a dark coloureds wash which goes on at 40C with bio.

Then a dark DS2 wash that goes on 40C with non-bio.

A DH shirts wash. Although today I washed his shirts with coloureds and kept my fingers crossed.

KateShmate · 02/01/2012 22:33

Im with Gin - all my stuff goes in together!
If its new dark stuff - then I do a special dark wash (a treat for me!)
Obviously if it was something special or something then I would put it in separately, but I can honestly say that I've never dis-coloured anything.
I go with the 'nothing these days would run!' (As in clothes)..
Only bed linen goes separately as I like to make sure its properly washed and ours is bloody expensive

pollyblue · 02/01/2012 22:38

Silentboob - you wash your dog in the machine?! Grin

ThePathanKhansWitch · 02/01/2012 22:42

Yes, i only have white bedlinen, whites, lights, brights and darks.

Appuskidu · 02/01/2012 23:28

Wow-thank you for the responses, I didn't expect so many!

Can I ask how long your hot washes are on your machine? I tend to do things on a 40 degree basic wash which lasts 30 minutes (is this my problem?!) but if I try to set it to a 60 or 90 degree wash-the time automatically goes up to about 120/150 minutes which just seems ridiculous!?
