Can you get a dishwasher serviced?

Mine leaves white residues on stuff no matter whether the salt is low or topped up well. Some new and expensive cutlery got corroded and now I can't dishwasher it. The Bosch dishwasher I have is about ten years old. Can I get it serviced or do I just need a new one?

Our brand new dishwasher wasn't cleaning well (obviously didn't need a service as brand new), so I had a proper look at the instruction manual, and googled various things, and the following seems to have sorted it:

On my dishwasher you can calibrate it according to how hard the water is in your area. Our water is very hard so I did calibrate the machine accordingly . Check your instruction manual. You can adjust both the levels of salt and rinse aid according to the hardness of your water.

Do you use rinse aid? We now use that as well as salt (and are going to change to a tablet that isn't a 4 in 1). Apparently using separate salt, rinse aid and tablet can sometimes be better than using a combined product.

Occasionally do a very hot wash with the dishwasher on empty, and use a dishwasher cleaning tablet.

Clean the filters regularly.

This link is quite helpful, especially the section on cloudy glasses and determining the cause.

Thanks for this. Where is the adjustment thingy on yours? Mine is old and I don't think I've got the instructions anymore. Useful to know that going and buying a new one might not help. Rinse aid is making a bit of a difference.

Mine doesn't have a separate adjustment thingie but you have to press the other buttons in a funny combination and make a certain number of lights show at once, and that means it's adjusted for the hardness of your water. Took me about half and hour to figure out what the instruction manual meant, but I think it was definitely worth it!

Might be possible to find the instruction manual for yours by googling? Or ringing up Bosch's customer service line?

And trying the other things.

what's the model number?

PigletJohn · 27/12/2011 17:05

apart from modern ones with an electronic control, Bosch diswashers usually have a little plastic blue or white adjuster in the top left corner of the doorframe. You have to open the door and kneel down to see it. There is a sort of clockface with a arrow in the middle that you can turn with a very small coin or a screwdriver (with plastic, always use a screwdriver that is exactly the right size, or you may damage the slot)

IIRC "0" means incoming soft water, no regen, and the higher numbers are for harder water. You might need a torch.

Piglet - fantastic advice as ever.

I have found the dial but unfortunately it was already on the highest setting so that won't make a difference.

what's the model number? might be on the top edge of the door

has anybody ever put detergent in the salt tub?

PigletJohn · 27/12/2011 18:01

p.s.

scrape some of the white residue off. Does it dissolve in cold water (salt) does it dissolve in hot water (detergent) does it fizz in vinegar (limescale)?

S5g27b seems to be the model number. I will try the assorted tests once dc in bed....good plan.
