I reckon we have enough storage but none of it fits iyswim.

The Lego kits, the random fiddly bits. THE JIGSAWS!!!!!!

Wrt toy rotation, how much do you put away and how often do you rotate.

Oh me too and don't say trofast because it's got to be in our sitting room, and I don't want it looking like a classroom

bounty007 · 27/12/2011 16:52

In our house, all jigsaws are out of boxes in zip lock bags kept in a large plastic storage box, each jigsaw is assigned a letter, each piece has this letter on back in thick black marker.

fluffytowels · 27/12/2011 18:23

Bounty. Excellent idea. I did try that once but the bags got damaged and all the bits fell out. Maybe I need stronger bags or wallets.

What kind do you use?

lots of lovely, plastic, lidded boxes.

a box for playmobile.
a box for hama beads
a box for puppies/kittens in my pocket.
a box for stickers
a box for pens etc
a box for farm

just... boxes. they are your friend.

I'm doing a trofast run to Ikea on friday and will stick it in my front room because I'd rather it looked like a school then have every surface covered in random clutter :)

WeirdFishes · 27/12/2011 19:37

My house is covered in toys too, have decided some of them will have to go to the local charity shop before I drown in them.

Scootergrrrl · 27/12/2011 19:40

Expedit is better than Trofast for your living room cos the wicker baskets look almost grown up. We have the toys subdivided into the smaller Ikea boxes with lids inside these. Or at least we mean to....

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 27/12/2011 19:48

I have the playmobil in plastic boxes with lids. Each set has a box to itself. I am quite uptight about it all but it means that when they want to play pirates then the pirate box comes out, when they want farms, the farm box comes out. Otherwise it was all muddled together and no one played with it as it took too long to find the set they wanted.

I stack the boxes in the wardrobe (built in one) but shelves would be better so I could pull out one box without touching the others. The shelves are on the to do list. Hmm

I do the same for other toys but all our Lego is just in one huge box as they prefer to make up their own stuff than build specific sets. I do keep the instructions though so that they can build the set if they want to. A freind has a ring binder with plastic wallets that she puts the instructions in. I have a filing cabinet so keep them either in the huge box or in the filing cabinet.

I agree with a toy clear out and rotation as well. I put stuff what I think is outgrown in the loft and see how long it takes for someone to ask for it. If it is not asked for it can be ebayed. If it is asked for it comes down for a while and then wait again to see if it is mentioned.

Despite all this it is an eternal problem.

Hobbycraft had a nice selection of the really useful lidded boxes recently in rainbow colours (got them for my reading books in my classroom) and they would make nice storage for lego/playmobil/barbie etc. THe boxes stack, are easily handled by the kids as they aren't too big and look pretty in all their different colours. THey could be rotated so the ones on top and therefore most easily accesible to play with can be changed frequently.

DD has labelled shoe boxes on a book case, but she's older and sorted it herself.
We used to have plastic boxes, but most are too big and she wanted to sort people, animals, camping bits and hospital bits.
Her various cars and ambulances park on the shelves and she sets up rooms and wards on the top of the book case.
Unfortunately, I thought I was going to get room for boxes of top trump cards and other annoying small games that don't fit the deep crates, but she's just spent her Christmas money on more Playmobil !

I am currently sorting and storing LEGO using this
Efficient LEGO

Not sure how long it will last though.

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 02/01/2012 07:52

I like the efficient Lego storage - but there is no way I have time for that in our house .
Where do you buy expedit from ?
I'm going to Ikea today , to get another tall trofast unit .
I agree, I would rather look like a school , than look like a charity or junk shop .

Horopu · 02/01/2012 08:10

I live too far away from IKEA to benefit from them.
I am currently about to move house, need to get tidied for my sister staying for 2 weeks, get organised for going back to school (teacher) and prepare for an intensive course. So the LEGO storage is a displacement activity I think.

JetLi · 03/01/2012 14:05

I have just ordered a dozen drawstring bags from here and intend to fill em up, label them somehow and then lob them behind the settee.

browneyesblue · 03/01/2012 15:01

I got a couple of bags from the same place JetLi - I was pleased with the quality. They also printed them with my (very simple) labels, so I know what's in them.

drummerswife · 03/01/2012 15:21

just reserved 2 storage boxes at argos for dh to pick up tomorrow
going to sort through dd's toys/craft bits and get rid of anything she's not played with in the last year.the 2 boxes will go in her room which i plan to gut tomorrow
then on thurs whilst dd's at her nans i'll sort out her playroom [was dh's office/sanctuary] but the toys took over.
