Blocked shower

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 21/12/2011 10:14

I think my long hair might be causing a slow block in the shower because by the time I'm finished my feet are stood in a pool of water.
I've fished around but I can't pull anything out - so it must be further down the pipe. Am I right in thinking there are products you can put down the plughole (is it still called a plughole if there's no plug???) that will dissolve away any debris?
Any recommendations on what to do or buy?
thanks

Stick some bleach down if you have it. That may well sort it without buying anything special

Failng that, I got some stuff from Homebase.

TheGoldRoad · 21/12/2011 10:29

My hair does this. I have to unblock my shower every three months or so. I use this, putitndown at night then bast through in he morning.

Other brands may be available Xmas Grin

I am able to take the plughole bit out and then there is a plastic cyclinder that comes out and I remove hair/crud out of that before putting everything back in place

MeghanMc · 21/12/2011 12:50

Try leaving bleach in the plughole over night and hopefully it will 'dissolve' the hair. Apparently hair removal like Veets works as well. Or try sticking an old wire coat hanger down and see whether you can pull up any hair?

I have tried the Mr Muscle stuff and it does work.

Good luck with unblocking the drain.

Cybbo · 21/12/2011 12:52

Seona speaks sense. Undo the plug hole bit and pull out the satisfying clump of hair and old skin

Merry Christmas

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 21/12/2011 13:18

Thanks all - will put more bleach down than usual tonight and then if necessary will have a look for something stronger like Mr Muscle on the next supermarket shop.

Have already looked to see if I could get into and undo the plughole but couldn't undo it so am glad there are other routes - as that icky pile of hair and gunk would be likely to cause more mess of the vomit variety!

some shower wastes can be cleaned from above, since, unlike a basin or sink, you can't usually get at them from underneath.

for clearing blockages, bleach won't help.

try a drainblaster, this is a thing like a big fat bicycle pump with a rubber cup on the end - much better than the old rubber plunger

you can also get various disks with holes to go over the waste and catch the detritus.

PigletJohn · 21/12/2011 16:34

p.s. there is almost certainly a screw in the middle of the grate over the plughole.

wonkylegs · 21/12/2011 16:40

You may need a drain snake (honest it's not rude although DH finds it hilarious)
Google them they are fab for clearing blocked drains, ours are narrow Victorian drains and are always getting clogged, saves a fortune in plumbers. It'll catch anything even if it's quite far down the pipe and is reusable time and time again.
I have lovely long locks so we have this problem lots... If it's for the shower you'll probably want quite a fine / flexible one as the bends are usually quite acute compared with baths/kitchen sinks.

Milliways · 21/12/2011 20:39

We now use a hair catcher! Remove plug a replace with what looks like a plug sized tea strainer that EVERYONE has to empty after each shower. like this one for £2! Took a bit of getting used to (training for teens!) but we no longer get blockages so well worth a few quid.

Olbasoil · 21/12/2011 20:45

plunger , Dh used it on ours ( after months of complaining about it being blocked) and some lovely black gunge and hair came up with it

ItsaMissTerri · 21/12/2011 22:20

Found this product a few years ago and it works the best on dissolving hair in shower drain and also grease in waste disposal (tho pricey its worth it as it actually does work) www.diy.com/nav/fix/plumbing/plumbing-supplies/cleansers___joint_compounds/-specificproducttype-drain_opener/Instant-Power-Hair-and-Grease-Drain-Opener-9271670
i buy from local MICA shop as its cheaper there.

highriggs · 21/12/2011 22:27

I fill ours with bicarbonate then leave for a bit then some vinegar to make small explosion then boiling water. Only thing that worked. Might need to do it twice .

mrsfollowill · 21/12/2011 22:28

'Liquid Power' Sink and drain unblocker - 99p from Savers for 1 litre- pour full bottle down for 'stubborn' blockages- leave 1hr (or overnight if poss) flush with hot water the next morning and watch the hairball bounce into your outside drain Grin
Also works brilliantly on a kitchen sink blocked with lamb fat

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 22/12/2011 10:02

ok - this mornings update - bleach as predicted somewhere above was not enough...
Lunchtime will look for a sink unblocker and a hair catcher in town...
If I can't find an unblocker then def try bicarb and vinegar - there's a part of me that wants to try that!!!
(Doublechecked - there is definitely no screw to dismantle the plug - looks integral to the shower tray or simply stuck in place with sealant so I'm hoping I can resolve it with products!)
Thanks all for advice...

I can stick my finger down one of the open bits of the plughole and the inner ring just twists round and can be pulled out (leaving the outer ring that attaches to the shower tray). Soda crystals are also supposed to help unblock drains

DressDownFriday · 22/12/2011 10:57

I've had exactly the same problem this week - I can't access the plug hole either.

Tried bleach - didn't work
Tried vinegar - didn't work
Bought some plug hole unblocker from Savers (£1.99 I think) - worked a treat - instructions were to use full bottle but I used half and I'm saving the other half for future use. [tight wad emoticon]

PigletJohn · 22/12/2011 11:37

if there is no screwhead, then I think it might be like Seonas.

because of the way they are made, you have a part that goes in from the bottom, and a part that goes in from the top.
