Posters on the walls - if you're not a teenager, is it a bad idea?

I rather fancy using some retro posters to jazz up a wall in the kichen. Not framed and not classical paintings turned into posters. Things that were originally posters. But - and I know I shouldn't care one iota - would it look a bit silly? I'm not a student or a teenager anymore.

It would look a bit studenty, but I don't think that's a major issue is it? Specially in a kitchen!

But if it was me, I'd probably get some cheap simple frames for them, just because I think they look a bit nicer than the not-very-flat blu-tacked look!

Flyingoutofcontrol · 20/12/2011 11:38

Maybe use clip frames to make it look less studenty and also keep the posters nicer for longer?

nkf · 20/12/2011 11:41

Hmmm. I wondered about frames. I was thinking more of putting them close together as if they were wallpaper rather than treating them as proper pictures.

Oooh, like that idea.

Although, given our kitchen gets quite steamy and hot, have you considered that said posters may become tatty quite quickly? I know the ones in my student kitchen needed replaced every year.

Maybe laminate them?

Flyingoutofcontrol · 20/12/2011 14:13

Or, have you seen this?

nkf · 20/12/2011 14:13

Forgot about heat. Back to the drawing board.

i like the idea (gonna use it for my downstairs toilet but its gonna be ski lift pass maps because we are slightly obsessed with hurtling down mountains on snowboards!)
Could you do a big clip frame (or a number of smaller ones) if the heat/steam would be a problem?

Flyingoutofcontrol · 21/12/2011 09:26

Just a thought... and it may be a really weird one Xmas Blush

Would putting up the posters then covering with a thin layer of PVA glue stop the steam damage? Sets like a rock, but nice and clear...

Told you it was weird Xmas Grin

I just had some posters done with a sort of foam board backing. Smooths out all the wrinkles, means the edges don't get tatty. It's not too expensive and a local framing shop should be able to do it.

nkf · 21/12/2011 12:43

Flying, I like that idea. And I wondered if using wallpaper paste would make a better effect than blue tack. Blimey, I haven't even said the words, "blue tack" for years. I'm clearly regressing.

PVA is not waterproof so if you try to sponge off the dirt and kitchen grease it will possibly come off, or possibly stay there with dirt embedded in it.

Flyingoutofcontrol · 22/12/2011 05:38

Varnish? Clear wood variety rather than nail varnish Xmas Grin

inmysparetime · 22/12/2011 06:49

You could make a decoupage of the posters, you can get special varnish to stick it on, then a final layer of shellac from a DIY shop.

nkf · 22/12/2011 13:02

Am not entirely sure what decoupage is but will google it later. I think clear varnish would work. Am going to try it. Just sticking it first in case I don't quite like it. I can look at ways of making it more permanent later.

doesn't it mean "cutting-out?"

Flyingoutofcontrol · 22/12/2011 18:16

Yup. Principle is cutting round things and sticking higglety pigglety so it looks cool and interesting (more exact descriptions are available Xmas Grin )

Looks good if you have an arty eye but crap if you're like me and keep repositioning things until they look tatty Xmas Sad
