Having problems with clothes washing - i put all whites in together (although usually some of DD's pink bits go in too) - but despite adding vanish (the white one) to each wash it never comes back 'white' - also white socks etc still ahve mud stains on (again despite vanish) - also DS has a few little rugby shirts, coloured with white collars and now the collars have gone grey?? how can I get them white again and prevent this happening?? what am I don't wrong?? Have just brought some colour catcher sheets to go in with the 'mixed coloured' clothes so hoping that will help other white collars going grey - but can i fix the grey ones and what about keeping my whites... white???

All help very much appreciated!! :)

Ok here goes....
1 No coloured in the white wash at all, even cream.

2 Use double the amount of powder you usually use.

3 Use a whitening product eg dr beckmanns, dylon that kind of thing.

4 60c wash.

5 Use the intensive wash function if you have one, never quickwash.

6 Soak the worst greyish items in a colour run removal product.

7 Put neat chlorine bleach on staining such a tea, red wine etc.

8 Get some lakeland dolly balls, they pound against the washing
while its in the machine and get extra grime out. It says you
can reduce the amount of powder this way but I didnt bother.

hth!.

Yeah, Fluffy has it. Hotter wash, longer wash.

Look for Dr Beckmann's Glowhite. It's sold everywhere.

fairimum · 12/12/2011 17:04

thank you :) going to try the glowhite!! Having done some googling I don't think our very hard water can be helping either! :) Thanks so much!

I put napisan in with my washing, much cheaper than vanish.

Do you live in a hard water area? It kills the clothes, you can add some soda crystals to the wash and that softens the water and acts as a stain remover. Use it like the vanish alongside your powder etc.

My lovely sheets from White Company have started to go grey in the middle despite regular washing. I have used Vanish, biological liquid, soaked them, hot wash etc. Has anyone tried soaking in dishwasher tablets? I think staining maybe from suntan cream

Lineala · 15/08/2022 12:02

Soak in diluted bleach for at least 2 hours, providing they are 100% cotton, then 60 degree wash with bio powder.

Nsky62 · 15/08/2022 12:04

Use spot on stain remover, I always use bio d laundry bleach no issues, wash at 60 or 40, won’t get persil whiteness ( no optical brighter), soft white tho

MilliwaysUniverse · 15/08/2022 12:17

Glowhite. It's the business, really works well.

PerfectRun · 15/08/2022 12:17

Drying whites on the sun makes a huge difference.

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2022 12:20

Hot long wash is the only thing that really helps also a bit of vanish in the prewaah pre wash section.

Cynderella · 15/08/2022 15:53

I used a mix of homemade washing powder (grated soap and soda crystals) and Ariel. Only white cottons in the load.

Temp wise, I'm trying to use my cheaper 40deg half hour wash more often, but for whites, I will use 60deg cottons wash. Every few weeks, I use a 90deg wash. I used to do that every month when washing nappies, but now it's probably every couple of months. A washing machine engineer advised that - especially in hard water areas.

And hard water - that's why I use soda crystals - much cheaper than Calgon. And as pp said, Napisan rather than Vanish although I don't use that in every wash.

Only washing white whites together is essential, I think - I used to ignore that in a bid to get a full load together, but now I have only white towels and white sheets, it's easier to do.

No colours
60 deg wash
I use Bold and add a tablespoon of soda Crystals
Dry in sunshine
