Washing pillows??

Has anyone ever machine washed and tumble dried feather pillows? I have never done this and wondered if they come out OK?? The instructions on the label say they can be done but I am a bit unsure if they will come out all flat and droopy!

Not a pillow but a feather duvet yes. It came out absolutely fine, still nice and puffy.

Add some tennis balls or washing dollys/tumble drier balls to the tumble drier, they 'beat' the pillows and keep them fluffed up Xmas Smile

I've washed and dried pillows and quilts many times, they always come out fine. Crack on Xmas Grin

JojoLapin · 13/12/2011 19:14

What temperature?

oreocrumbs · 13/12/2011 19:36

30 or 40 I think but there will be a label on them and I would follow that Xmas Smile

Thank you Lizzie for asking and all for replying, I did not think it could go through the machine and was about to get new ones!

I prefer to do the quilt when the weather is fine so it can be dried outside - it smells a bit like damp dog Shock when it's drying (it's fine once fully dried though).

Pillows are easier as they don't take as long to dry - still smell like damp dog when drying though

I wash my feather pillows one at a time on an intensive 60 wash and they come up lovely they do. The tumble drying takes an age but you have to do it until they are bone dry.

PigletJohn · 14/12/2011 12:51

you may find it easier to put them in the big drier at a laundrette. They do need plenty of space to move around while drying (same with duvets)

sometimes the pillow cover is not so white after washing.

mousysantamouse · 15/12/2011 14:28

yes, but don't use biological detergent, as it "eats" the feathers.
I wash the duvets after hayfever season. I take it to the laundrette, because their dryers are much quicker and bigger.
feathers can stand quite a high temperature, but I usually do them on 40.

lizzie712 · 15/12/2011 18:12

The label says 40 degrees and hot tumble until bone dry. Not sure how to tell if they are bone dry though!! Thanks for everyone's advice, I'll give it a go!!!

How do you dry them if no tumble drier?

PigletJohn · 15/12/2011 20:19

you don't, and they go rotten.

DialMforMummy · 15/12/2011 20:52

I have done it in the summer and dried them in the sun. No problem.
