Gas or electric fire for living room

To minimise use of central heating, to warm an awkward, L shaped living room and to be somewhere where the teenagers (and cats) might descend to come down to - we'd like a gas fire. Have a flue which has been checked - all good - where old gas fire was years ago.

Gas or electric? Cheaper/more eco friendly/more effective?

Can't spend a huge amount - maybe up to £400 - any suggestions would be gratefully received.

I think gas is cheaper but electric doesnt gas you to death with carbon monoxide.

We had a gas heater poisening us last year so I am a bit biased now towards electric.

Essentially it depends how much you spend on each unit of gas/electric and how many hours a day you will be running it for.
