Where do you keep clothes you have worn but don't yet need washing?

We have a big armchair in our bedroom. I have decided I am fed up with it being an expensive clothes horse for clothes that have been worn once but aren't ready for the washing basket yet. So I have moved it into the living room, to be used for its intended purpose.

Now there is nowhere to put clothes in the bedroom except on the floor. What does everyone else do? I am unwilling to move another chair in there, surely there is something better. I don't like putting worn clothes back in the cupboard, but maybe I should do that...

Have always wondered this. Shall be watching this thread with interest (clothes currently draped over the edge of my bed).

Firawla · 04/12/2011 12:53

on a chair but if it gets more than 1 or 2 things on it, they get on my nerves so i just chuck them in the washing basket anyway. i think most people use chairs in bedroom for this.

Wigeon · 04/12/2011 12:55

I just put them back in the wardrobe / drawers. Doesn't everyone?

Pascha · 04/12/2011 12:58

Confused away in the wardrobe, why wouldn't I? Surely if they are too dirty to hang up they need to go in the wash.

Graciescotland · 04/12/2011 13:01

I got my DH a valet stand as he likes to rewear clothes this I tend to wash everything after one wear but I've normally been stickified by our toddler!

noddyholder · 04/12/2011 13:10

Hanger on a hook on the back of teh door

Cybbo · 04/12/2011 13:11

I hang them back in the wardrobe. Doesn't everyone?

member · 04/12/2011 13:12

I have a drawer for worn once things!

BornSicky · 04/12/2011 13:14

scrumpled up folded on an ottoman

Sossiges · 04/12/2011 13:15

ATM - strewn on the chair, slung over the wardrobe door, hung on the back of the door and dangling over the stairgate, none on the floor though (hurray!)

oreocrumbs · 04/12/2011 13:22

Over the banister as we don't have room for a chair in our room (but thats what I would use). I don't re wear alot as between DD and the dogs most things are dirty at the end of the day!

sprinkles77 · 04/12/2011 13:49

back in the cupboard / drawers if they are not being worn tomorrow. If I plan to put them back on in the morning they go on the chair / desk / on top of laundry basket (it has a lid).

PigletJohn · 04/12/2011 14:27

hanging worn clothes back in the wardrobe attracts moths. They are especially attracted to clothes that have been worn by women. Single men who live alone don't often get moths.

Mrsrobertduvall · 04/12/2011 14:45

I wash most of my clothes if I have worn them once.

grumplestilskin · 04/12/2011 14:46

hanger on the door, some stuff goes back in the wardrobe, cardies etc, but not skin to skin type clothes like dresses and teeshirts

auburnlizzy78 · 04/12/2011 14:57

If you put once-worn clothes back in the wardrobe, how do you keep track of what in your wardrobe is clean, and what isn't? You could keep bringing the same items out and putting them back multiple times and thinking that they were nearly clean but in fact were on their 5th or 6th wear! Even if they were only cardigans worn over other things, they'd still probably be grubby enough for a wash!

I throw worn once stuff over my husband's drum kit in the spare room. Once there are more than ten things on there I either make an outfit out of it (with often hilarious/tragic results) and then wash it all, or scoop the whole lot into the washing basket there and then!

gamerwidow · 04/12/2011 14:57

If I'm not intending to wear the item the next day then it goes in the wash otherwise I fold it up and put it on the chest of drawers ready to be worn the next day.

My DH on the other hand like to build up a collection of items on his weights bench which I sporadically get fed up with and put in the wash.

MarieFromStMoritz · 04/12/2011 15:00

Yeah, but what about Dry Clean Only stuff? Everything I wear through the week is DCO. Not sure what to do with it.

Wigeon · 04/12/2011 15:06

I know when stuff needs a wash because I look at it and see if it's grubby and I smell it and see if it's smelly. If yes to either, it goes in the wash. If no, I wear it again. Repeat until smelly and / or grubby. Smile

RedHotSanta · 04/12/2011 15:07

Hung over the bannister for creasable items.

Folded up on washing basket lid for anything else.

If I haven't worn them again after a few days, I usually get fed up and chuck them in the wash.

PigletJohn · 04/12/2011 15:14

Business suits go back in the wardrobe, in order, until it is their turn to be worn again.

In the days when people used to smoke cigarettes, they had to spend a night hanging in the bathroom or the airing cupboard to get rid of the disgusting stink of fags. Smokers are lucky not to be able to smell it.

StopRainingPlease · 04/12/2011 15:17

On a chair - but it's a small child's rocking chair and doesn't take up much space. DH has a dining-type chair. I wouldn't put them back in the wardrobe, as I tend to wear tops twice before washing, and jeans 3 or 4 times. If they went back in the wardrobe I'd lose track of whether they were totally clean. And I don't always wear exactly the same things until they need a wash, so chair it is.

startail · 04/12/2011 16:06

Heap on desk in corner.
It's DD2s mountain on top of her chest of draws that gets me annoyed.
I do suggest the please wear what's in the heap till it's dirty. I don't care if it's not exactly right, your wardrobe is closed solution.

Knickname · 04/12/2011 16:10

On the floor. Wish I had a better solution. TBH most stuff goes straight in the wash after looking after 2 toddlers all day.

sprinkles77 · 04/12/2011 23:17

auburn I keep track by inspecting and sniffing. if it looks and smells OK then I wear it or put in the wardrobe, if not it goes in the wash. I don't really keep track, but I do know that the stuff on the top of the shelf / to the right of the hanging space, is stuff that has been worn.
stop I actually don't care if stuff is "totally clean" except knickers and socks, though obviously would not wear something that has visible grime on it. I do have one pair of jeans that I love, and for some reason I have never washed them. I have had them 4 years! My excuse is that they are my extreme "skinny" jeans, that only fit for about 6 weeks when I first got them (depression related drastic weight loss, and again in my first trimester last preg, and again in first trimester current preg due to drastic morning sickness related weight loss. But I am going to wash them because seeing that information in writing makes me realise that's skanky!
