Decorating 2yo DD1's new room. Really stuck for ideas.

DD1 is moving into a new room in time for DC2's arrival. I've ordered white pine furniture and a large wall sticker mural thing, www.beckyandlolo.co.uk/eaction/ecom.largeImg/scroll_tree_wall_stickers/, but I'm a bit stuck with wall colours, curtains and bedding.

I guess curtains will be the most expensive thing to replace if she goes off them as it's a big window and needs blackout lining, so I'd like to get that right.

I don't like really over the top pink princessy ballerina type stuff, hence the tree and owl thing and I don't like character stuff.

Am I being a bit silly trying to work around the wall sticker?

Can anyone give me some good ideas or links?

Thank you.

Very sweet wall sticker! I've just bought a caterpillar one for DD's new room in new house ( www.supernice.co.uk/product.php/31/91/caterpillar ) - I like the fact you can take them off when you're bored of them and don't need any holes in the wall like hanging things up.

We painted DD's room pale green and now I am regretting it as I want to put lots of bright colourful things in and feel it is all going to be a bit clashy. If I could do it again I would go white or cream - which will go nicely with your sticker.

(although maybe a bit too white with white furniture?... Maybe a very very pale green would work for you?)

Then I'd get plain bright coloured curtains/blind - as you say, you don't want to spend a load of money on something that DD will grow out of within a few years, and if you have the sticker, toys and books, lightshade, etc. etc. there will be quite enough interest in the room without complicating it with patterned curtains. We got plain blinds made-to-measure by a local blinds guy.

I really like Ikea bedding for non-princessy but cute childrens stuff. Eg www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/60161311/ BUT - I think they're a slightly weird size? Haven't done our ikea trip yet though so haven't checked it out properly. I'm finding it hard to find bedlinen that doesn't have characters and isn't too girly/boy-y... Think we'll end up with something plain there too.

I love the wall sticker!

DDs bedroom is painted in Dulux Ivory Lace which is a really creamy white (almost pale yellow but definitely cream iyswim). In your DD's room I would be tempted to get plain cream blinds or curtains and add some coloured trimmings which could be removed as she gets older. For bedlinen, plain gingham always looks gorgeous (maybe lilac and pink mixed) plus maybe this quilt or anything from this range.

LOVE decorating children's rooms!

I would go white walls then you can change the whole thing just by different wall sticker in future and nothing will clash, and you can add colour by bedding, lightshade, accessories etc. curtains i would also do quite neutral if you are wanting them for longterm, otherwise it will restrict how you change the room in future cos of clashing, so would go for a plain colour although not sure which colour would be best for them cos you cant really have white for curtains?
I really like the wall sticker.
There was a thread the other week someone asking about where to get nice, not ott pinkified and not character bedding for girls and people said john lewis and m&s, from what i remember

Thanks for the ideas.

Mackrelmint - DD's room is currently pale green with animal stickers as we didn't find out whether we were having a boy or girl. I think it would go well with the tree sticker, but I might try for something a bit pinkier as I'm not completely anti-pink.

I love the bobbles, petitdonkey. That's a great idea to liven up plain curtains. I can see myself going bobble crazy and trimming everything that stays still with them!

Firawla - I think that post about bedding might have been mine. I'm a bit obsessed with it all at the moment.

If you have got white furniture, you need coloured walls. How about very pale pink walls, which will look great with the sticker and the white furniture, and darker plain pink curtains - personally I like velvet curtains as they are warm and have a deep cosy look to them. And cotton velvet curtains wash in the machine.

Striped pink and white sheets from Cologne and Cotton would look nice.

We have the same stickers in DD (21 mths) bedroom and they look fab - everyone comments on them!!

I went for these curtains from JL which look great and should last her a while as they aren't too babyish. They have lightshades and a fab bean chair in matching fabric and you can buy the fabric by the metre if you are handy with a sewing machine to make a duvet set. I might try this when DD outgrows her Gro bag!

Thanks for the link RachelHRD. I love those curtains, but it's hard to tell online if the colours co-ordinate with the sticker. Do they look good together? (I guess they do or you woudn't have chosen them Smile).
Is the fabric soft enough for a duvet set. I'm OK with a sewing machine, and could probably manage a duvet cover.

Yes they work well with it (I think!!) the curtain fabric feels lovely and soft so I think would work for a duvet set and the curtains are blackout lined so are good for blocking light. I like the fact that the design could last into teenagehood (my 10 year old niece has the same curtains!)

The room is painted in a warm beige with a beige carpet (new build so all beige at the moment) but I think a pale <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=pale+green+paint&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1024&bih=485&tbm=isch&tbnid=HqGBR3R-68gBUM:&imgrefurl=www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay%3FlangId%3D110%26storeId%3D10151%26partNumber%3D935248&docid=jXNuoy8uvvJzDM&imgurl=www.homebase.co.uk/wcsstore/homebase/images/647253HBO111111M.jpg&w=240&h=288&ei=5BraTtWuGoPMhAe5s92_Dg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=95&vpy=124&dur=105&hovh=230&hovw=192&tx=110&ty=121&sig=102586078415524502348&page=1&tbnh=121&tbnw=101&start=0&ndsp=12&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">green would work nicely with it.

You will love the stickers - I am chuffed every time I go into her room they look so nice!
