Thinking about changing the dishwasher for a tumble dryer.....

Has anyone done this and regreted it? Or has it been the best thing you did? How did you make the change? Family aren't that keen on the idea but I love my washing machine so wouldn't want to get one of those washer dryer things. we only have space for one applience unless the dishwasher goes. We only use the dishwasher at the end of the day but it does save us having to do the washing up straight away as work doesn't always allow the time.

I'm fed up of trying to get the washing dry when the weather forces me to dry inside. (yes I do have a garden) I like to put a load on on most days. This way I can try to keep on top of it so it doesn't get me down. If I do more than one load then it's too much. Especially as I work from home. It's not always possible for clothes to be hanging around downstairs. Upstairs there isn't that much space. Tried to set up the airer in the office but as it's not tidy floor space isn't good and sometimes need to use the pc in there.

Today the washing was put out till it was getting dark. Problem though it wasn't finished drying before coming in as it's so cold atm. Yes I was able to get the wetter stuff on the rads but the rest is on the airer. Hopefully it will dry enough to be put away in the morning before work starts.

I've never had a dishwasher and can't justify buying one. It really isn't that difficult to wash up and we are a family of 4. I couldn't manage without the tumble dryer though. Only bought it last winter and it's great not to have washing strewn all over the house. I'd go for the tumble dryer every time.

I love and use my dishwasher WAY more than my tumble drier.

I could live without a washer, but without my dishwasher... NEVER!!!

I got a washer/dryer, it was a bit on the expensive side but it has a huge capacity and dries most loads within an hour. (I'm still raving about it even when it has been with me for months)

Melfish · 29/11/2011 00:07

tumble dryer, definitely. when my dishwasher carks it, the tumble drier is coming in from the garage. The dishwasher was put in by the previous inmates and before I moved, I'd never had one and coped fine. Think I may have to get a hole made in the outside wall though, to put the exhaust pipe out (don't want a condenser).

My dishwasher broke down a few weeks ago and our kitchen is in total disarray as a result. I also used to be one of the naysayers who said it was just as quick to wash stuff up yourself, till we got one. It's just so good to be able to load everything in and walk away, knowing everything will be clean in the morning. I am desperate to get it fixed. We also have a tumble drier, left behind by the last owners of the house, which I have never used.

If you have a garden and usually get to put the stuff outside, then that seems not too bad to me. A tumble dryer might be handy in the winter for days like today but a dishwasher is handy all year round, IMO.

Blimey, what a split of opinions!

CointreauVersial · 29/11/2011 00:12

I use my dishwasher on a daily basis, and couldn't live without it.

I use my tumble dryer maybe once a fortnight (but I do have a warm area to set up a drying rack).

I have a combined washer dryer, and it is brilliant.

Dorje · 29/11/2011 00:15

The tumble dryer will make a unholy mess of your dinnerware.
I'd keep the dishwasher!

Yep kitchen stays tidier without a dishwasher. I got one but limit its use because of the electricity costs (got an owl monitor to scare me silly!!). I think you would have to go for the tumbler but limit its use if you can - the costs are frightening to run the things!!

valiumredhead · 29/11/2011 11:18

I would chose a drier over a dishwasher every time!!!

AMumInScotland · 29/11/2011 11:25

I much prefer having a dishwasher!

How about just not using the dishwasher at all for a week? Then you'd have a fair idea of how irritating you find doing without it. If you're not that bothered, then go ahead and change. If you find yourself cursing the lack of it more than the lack of the tumble drier then yuo'll have proved the point without the expensive change!

PigletJohn · 29/11/2011 11:39

well, the tumble drier will cost more to run (about 40p an hour typically) but it will prevent your house suffering the humidity, condensation and mould that is caused by draping wet washing about the house. If you factor in the cost of mould killers, redecorating and potentially treating rot, the tumble drier may seem less extravagant. At least if you have a washing line as well you need not use the tumble drier so much.

PigletJohn · 29/11/2011 11:43

p.s. you can sometimes get a stacking kit to put the tumble drier (light) on top if the washing machine (heavy) but they are not often seen in the UK.

It may be easier to do this if they are the same brand.

NotnOtter · 29/11/2011 11:46

Dishwasher camp here - I'd go bonkers without one - dryer rarely used

SoupDragon · 29/11/2011 11:47

If I had to pick one to stay it would be the dishwasher.

sandym3g · 29/11/2011 11:48

We've found a solution! The area where the recyle bins are currently can house the condenser tumble dryer. The recyle bins can be relocated to on top of a long low set of drawers that we have to the side of the kitchen.

This would mean the tumble would be opposite the washer and the paperwork won't be piled up on the drawers (although possibly on the recyle bins. But at least that way we have to go through them before we empty the bins anyway)

:)

dishwasher over dryer definitely!
or can you persuade dh to be responsible for all the dishwashing?
