A good idea, or totally nuts?

Pitching an open-sided gazebo over my rotary washing line so that I can use it all winter ?

I've had a similar idea but instead of a gazebo I thought about using a parasol.

Not sure whether either/both are nuts though, sorry!

PrettyCandles · 28/11/2011 14:55

I considered a parasol, too, but couldn't figure out how to anchor it, especially if it was to be big enough to provide decent shelter. Now that the lawn isn't going to be mowed for a few months, legs and guylines won't be in the way.

Wish I'd thought of this a couple of months ago, when summer stock was being cleared!

sounds reasonable

Bunbaker · 28/11/2011 15:04

I have considered something like that, but in practice I find that if it is a damp day the washing doesn't dry at all in the damp atmosphere anyway.

Am considering doing this under the covered side access to my house. Very sensible!

GrimmaTheNome · 28/11/2011 15:16

It mightn't dry well on a damp day, but I guess it would stop it getting soaked by a sudden shower - which could be useful year round.

Not sure how much of the drying effect comes from direct sunlight though, which it would impede.

my mum dries clothes on a washing line in her carport if it s wet. She reckons that even a few hours in the outside means less time in the tumble dryer, even if the air is damp.

DottyDot · 28/11/2011 15:45

we had a carport built next to our house for this very purpose! Couldn't afford a garage and have no room in our teeny tiny kitchen for a tumble drier - best money I ever spent. The washing does get very cold in the winter (sometimes frosty!) but has definitely reduced the number of trips to the laundrette Grin

Bunbaker · 28/11/2011 17:17

I put my washing in the conservatory and leave the door open, but on damp days it doesn't dry it at all.

PrettyCandles · 28/11/2011 19:06

Maybe the effectiveness depends on air-currents; a good through-draught in the car-port, as opposed to still air in a conservatory.

When we used to live in a flat, we hung laundry on the balcony all year round, hanging a sheet or bath-towel at the front if it was raining.

My neighbour does this. It looks wierd but she always has washing out, so seems to work for her!
