Handheld steam cleaners - yay or nay?

I have decided to revolutionise: my Dyson and my broom are going to the attic to be replaced with a G-Tech Cordless Carpet Sweeper and a Steam Mop.

I am probably getting a Vax (S2?) steam mop but can get it from 2 different shops - the slightly more expensive one comes with a 'free' hand held steamer.

I am definitely not convinced on the hand held steamer idea. Google suggests cleaning the BBQ (not going to happen), Hob (easy to clean with cloth), defrosting freezer (not needed), cleaning sofas (eh?), cleaning walls and the ceiling (seriously? am I meant to clean the ceiling?) - the only good idea was cleaning windows and reviews are mixed on whether its any good at that.

So are they any good?

If it makes any difference, I have a 3 year old and an 8 month old, a job, a messy house and little time for cleaning - so immaculately clean is REALLY not an issue!

I borrowed my sisters steamer a couple of weeks ago to do the tiles in my bathroom.
I don't know the make, but it was actually hopeless and I used bleach.

haven't tried these steam mops but have used proper steam cleaners and my advice is get the most powerful one you can afford. The highest pressure and volume of steam gives you quicker and easier cleaning. Same with steam generator irons. Also look at steamer/vacuums in one - these are fab in my view as they are about as quick as vacuuming but get steam cleaned in the same time - much less mess and everything pretty dry straight away!

Don't mess about with hand held jobbies - in my experience they are a waste of money as don't have the power. And it takes a while to get the hang of steam cleaning! It is not a miraculous, easy process like the ads - but once you get the hang of it, it is very good, no chemicals and sparkling clean.

BUT if you have mildew on grout, will need to bleach or remove it as the steam is not going to get rid of the black once it is in the grout. On the surface, yes will remove but not once in the grout or sealant.

I had a hand held steam cleaner. Loved it the first time I used it. Went to use it again a few weeks later and the top had welded on shutShock Won't bother again I'm afraid.
