1970s & 80s Star Wars figures - will the dishwasher kill them?

I'm selling my husband's collection on ebay. They are really filthy so I want to clean them all before I list them.

I know that you can put toys in lingerie mesh bags in the dishwasher but I'm worried that it will take all of the paint off. Has anyone tried this with old toys?

Don't put them in the dishwasher, it'll take the paint off.

I'd use a bowl of soapy water and a toothbrush, or youcould use the dirt as a authentic feature!! :o

I would recommend using a light sponge. With surgical spirits. And dry them with kitchen towel This should take the dirt off. Do not immerse them in water. Then let them air for a while to get the surgical spirit smell off. My husband sells a lot of stuff on eBay. This is his advice by the way. They will sell for more if you have original weapons with them.

Thanks ladies. I am in Star Wars hell. I hate Star Wars and have all of these tiny weapons and bags to match with 16 different variations of the same figure. He won't do it as he hates ebaying but I am on a mission to sell everything that we own. I need to reclaim my house Grin.

Surgical spirits from a chemist??

Thank you! I think I would have killed them if left to my own devices.

UNless they are really really disgusting I would leave them and as for matching the accs - sell as a job lot maybe? Let some other nerd person do all the hard work!

Yea you get if from a chemist. Great stuff.

rainbow77

what does your DH say to the suggestion of just selling them as they are? Do the geeks collectors mind or do they like a bit of genuine 1980s dirt? Grin

DH says they def. prefer them cleaned up. You will earn more by selling them separately rather than as a job lot. It's a bit more hassle but worth it. Try www.rebelscum.com. And go to photo archive. You should be able to match figures and weapons there. He is a wealth of information on this topic.
