do you hang washing out in winter?

today was dry here and bright but despite being out since this morning my washing doesn't feel even slightly drier.

Is it a waste of time putting washing out on a cold day. Feel like i should bring it in now as its getting dark but then it feels hanging it out was a complete waste of time.

Maybe i should leave it out a few days. Im sure i have heard people saying they do dry outdoors even in winter.

I do if it's windy, but other than that it's pointless. It just stays as wet as it was when it went out and if you leave it, it will stay like that for days - which is a shame as I love line dried laundry - have to make do with the airer instead

SparklyCloud · 22/11/2011 15:58

I did yesterday, out on line at 9 am and brought in at 4 and straight on the indoor airer. It smelled fresh which I love about line dried clothes. By bedtime was dry.

Meglet · 22/11/2011 16:06

Yes.

In the dark, the rain and even the snow. At least it's out the way if it's on the line. It gets the creases out so I never need to iron things.

If I need things quickly then I put them on the airer but it gets in the way and the kids pull things off it.

Same as Sparkly - put it out when it's dry enough (and sometimes there is a surprise bit of wintery sun, which can be v effective at a bit of drying) and then just bring them in - at least they smell nice if nothing else. In my student house I used to try and leave stuff outside for a few days (we lived above a restaurant so I hated drying stuff inside). Eventually they would sort-of dry, but you could never really tell if they were wet or cold.

Also whilst they are on the line I can pretend I don't have the ironing still to come - not as easy when faced with a wall of folding airers...

...and yes, I leave things out for a few days at a time in winter.

I only tumble dry towels and sheets.

ggirl · 22/11/2011 16:09

nope
indoor airer , radiators or tumble drier

RainboweBrite · 22/11/2011 20:42

Never between November and late March at the very earliest!

Seona1973 · 22/11/2011 21:06

nope, I hate bringing washing in when it is still wet so hang it inside instead during winter

janek · 22/11/2011 22:08

yes. particularly when not using the heating during the day. it's somewhere to store it for a start, it must end up dryer than it went out, unless it's foggy or raining or something, and you've given it a headstart for the airer when the heating's on in the evening.

also, my mum pointed out to me that if the ground is drying, then the washing will dry too, so i always look at the ground as a guide to see if the washing i've just hung out will be any drier when i get it in...Grin.

AngelDog · 22/11/2011 23:05

No. We have a sheltered garden shaded by tall trees and things are as damp if not damper if hung outside between late Sept and May.

The ground is usually waterlogged too, so janek's test stands.

I find things start to smell if they stay damp too long.
