Laundry Queen wanted for advice to slovenly parent with filthy looking child

jcandps · 21/11/2011 19:32

My second child is of the BLW and puree mixed together persuasion plus likes to put her fingers in her mouth to comfort between mouthfulls and then pull at her toes. The result is 2 baths a day and filthy clothes. Her clothes have been through 4 children now and never held stains but now I am (almost) embarrassed to be seen with her. The trusy combo of non-bio and pink vanish bottle do not appear to cut the mustard.
Please spill your methods Laundry Kings and Queens....

A BIG bib- an arts and crafts one for older kids that covers arms and hands. Wipe clean, and machine washable. Ikea do the best ones.

pollyblue · 21/11/2011 20:46

Ah no, you need bio powder - Ecover is very good imo - and/or (if you can find it) good old-fashioned household soap instead of the Vanish. I think Fairy soap is hard to find now, but Sunlight is still around, and Boots do their own version. Also at least a 40 degree wash.

And a coverall as cookingfat suggests. Or a boiler suit Grin

CavemanDaveIsVeryBrave · 22/11/2011 08:47

I had to revert to bio now & then. Sunshine seems to be the best stain remover but sadly there is a bit of a shortage at the moment. Biotex is worth a try for a pre-wash soak but that is increasingly like rocking horse shit too. I like Vanish bar but time & elbow grease is required.

iambach · 22/11/2011 09:05

i used a fleece all in one sleepsuit instead of a bib, it covered them head to toe and i would just chuck it in the machine with the last load at night. They dry so quickly it was ready for the breakfast shift.

mine were all blw and all little messy gits!

Go to a cheap shop and buy some new clothes for her.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/11/2011 19:09

If you have an extra rinse function on the machine use that and BIO powder, non-bio has bleach in it but I read an article recently that said the bio isnt the cause of rashes in itself it's more not rinsing it all out properly.

You could put 3 tablespoons of soda crystals in every wash, brings everything up lovely.

Lakeland do dolly balls which I use, you put them in the washing machine with your clothes and they bump against the washing and beat the grime out of it. Aldi sometimes do them too but cheaper.

madmomma · 22/11/2011 20:02

My son is like this, and I rub through anything stained with warm water and fairy liquid before I put it through the wash. Bit of a pain, but it really works. Wet the stain, blob on a bit of neat fairy, rub & rinse. Then stick in the wash as normal. This totally outperforms stainremovers IMO

TryingToBeTidier · 22/11/2011 22:32

Soak in napisan
And get thee to Wilko/poundland/asda/superdrug for cheapy towelling longsleeved bibs.
I am strictly a persil non bio gal but have taken to doing a kitchen laundry load x 2 a week (teatowels and DS filthy avocado/weetabix ridden bibs) in Ariel Bio

Long sleeved bibs - really useful.
You will probably find that your DC still gets food on the remaining bits of clothes showing though too.
Fairy liquid is great. Bio powder a necessity - sorry - and I never found out how to get carrot stains out. -

Things like black current come out if soaked in milk first.
Don't wash in hot water before trying the fairy and COLD water or you could fix the stain.

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/11/2011 16:10

Whites always the best colour, I spray neat smartprice bleach on stains and wash immediately. No smell and the stains gone!

shrinkingnora · 23/11/2011 16:29

Another reception parent asked me where I had got DS's polo shirt from as she didn't know they had a third colour option. I had to explain that it was white but used to be DD's and is now very off white Blush

madmomma · 23/11/2011 20:53

haha nora!

jcandps · 25/11/2011 11:44

Thank you everyone, I am off to purchase items especially the bio.

just to add if worried about using Bio powder.
Use bio as a pre wash followed by non bio. It never irritated my DC done this way whereas bio on its own would.

EssentialFattyAcid · 26/11/2011 19:03

Long sleeve bibs are your friend
