How do I get a foam mattress clean?

I have an ikea foam mattress for my ds. It is for an extendable bed. Despite a few mattress covers, it has had a few accidents on it. I have tried cleaning it but it is nopw quite bad. We are not in a position where we can replace it.
Would a steam cleaner or carpet cleaner work? He still wears pull ups that have leaked. It is making his room smell and driving me up the wall. What can I do?

If you get the Febreeze spray for animals, that has an antibac ingredient that helps kill the bacteria making the smell as well as deodorising it. If you want to try steam cleaning I'd experiment with a small section on an underside corner first, as I'd be worried about the foam being damaged first.

If you have a sunny day, get it outside and exposed to sunlight as this helps sterilize things - though accept that his is not the best time of year to do this!!

PS - you could also try advertising on Freegle for a new matress - you never know!

Don't use a steam cleaner, it melts the foam, my friend found that out the wrong way!

I think I'd probably look at plastic wrapping the mattress, like they do in New Zealand and Oz to reduce SIDs. Then any smell or nastiness will be contained inside the wrapping and you could put the mattress protector over the top and it would still be cozy.

As far as I remember any polythene plastic is fine (not PVC plastic though) but I'm sure that if you google New Zealand and mattress wrapping you'd get plenty of advice. Remember to make sure the mattress is totally dry before you wrap it though.

Baking powder acts as a good deodoriser. Try liberally sprinkling it over and leaving it for a whole day if possible and then vacuum it up. I found it effective after my ds had thrown up over his car seat.

Sorry, I meant bicarb of soda rather than baking powder!
