Recommendations for a sewing machine for a beginner

My daughter has asked for a sewing machine for Christmas. We saw a cheapish one in Poundstretcher (49 reduced from 99) but the online reviews were poor. I think it was Hyunda.

I would rather spend more on something which will last and am thinking of around 120 max. Is it worth considering second hand or is it safer to buy new? I'll use the machine as well and have visions of us both making cushion, curtains, clothes (dd!) despite us both being enthusiastic beginners Grin. Any recommendations for good books also welcome.

Thanks Smile

I've looked at the John Lewis own brand ones, which come in cool colours, but the school teaches Textiles on a Janome, which are more, but I might look for a second hand one.....

www.sewingmachines.co.uk/JanomeSMD500_info.htm

A horrid website, but I've bought from this company and their customer service is fab! Free next day delivery, a few freebies thrown in (things to get you started like thread, scissors etc), free extended warranty and if you phone up with a problem you'll get straight through to a knowledgable human being who can talk you through possible solutions and not just read from a script.

Would also recommend a Janome, schools use them for a reason! They're generally less problematic and longer lasting. The one I've linked to is just under £100 and would be a good all rounder for a starter machine.

I've been looking at the John Lewis Mini for dd for Christmas and I'm sure I've read that it's made by Janome for JL.

You need to post in Arts and Crafts to get the most replies, I think. There is already a thread there on the same subject which might have some useful stuff. Smile

You need to get to a big John Lewis and test out the machines there. The staff will talk with you about what you need it for, and talk you through how to use particular machines - they're brilliant :)

JL ones are the same as Janome, yes

Fabulous advice thanks. Have decided to go for a Janome Smile
